A letter from Francis Chin:

From: The 2009 Shanxi-Hong Kong Air Rally Team (陝港拉力飛行隊)
To: Our dear friends and aviators

Everyone told us that it was impossible but we made it in 1971-72 flying 30,000 Km. from England to Hong Kong in VFR in a tiny 100 horsepower single-engined Beagle Pup two-seater aircraft.

Now 99.9% of people in 2009 told us that it was impossible but we again made it flying successfully from Hong Kong to Xian covering more than half of China in a single-engined Cessna.

Our aim and objectives are not on flying records. The significance is the success that China is now really showing enthusiasm and dedication to opening up its lower airspace for the first time at its 60th Anniversary for the development of general aviaion and general aviation education for all !

However we certainly could not make it without the friendship and kindness we received from all along the way. It is Christmas Season and it is time to remember kindness and friendship and to say thank you to you all.

Thank you for your faith in us for trusting your precious time in attending our Kick-off ceremony and waved us off in the distant Cheklapkok Hong Kong International Airport on 8 Oct.

We are very happy to report that the first in history Kong Kong to Xian Flying Rally has already successfully flown and completed in 6 days from 8 to 14 Oct 2009 ! We are grateful for your kind support to come to wave us off in low cloud base and poor visibility giving us a lot of morale and confidence in completing the seemingly impossible cross-country flight covering markedly varied and difficult mountainous terrain in China in a single engined (non turbo piston type) Cessna.

We wish to sincerely thank the very kind support of the community caring enterprises Textron, Cessna, Lycoming, Boeing, Jeppesen and Breitling ( as well as their staff and agents) whose very kind support and assistance have made our dream of Hong Kong to Xian cross-border flight a success and our dream of promoting general aviation and general aviation education in China a reality.

We wish to sincerely thank all the civil aviation authorities and Air Traffic Control staff across China and especially the Hong Kong CAD and ATC colleagues for giving us the most professional service and their utmost care+assistance+advice to ensuring our Hong Kong-Xian single-engined long distance cross-country flight a safe success. Without their assiatance our flight would not be possible. We are very proud of them. Three hearty cheers for them, Heep Heep Hurray !!!!

We wish to sincerely thank all the FBOs in China especially the HK Business Aviation Centre giving us excellent ground support all the way.

We also wish to thank all the journalists, TV and Press media who have enthusiastically helping us to propmote the knowledge of general aviation and our importance message of promoting general aviation education in China and for its leaders, people and children.

We wish to report that it is "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED". We have had an exciting flight braving bad weather, high wind, rain, smog, poor visibility, difficult terrain, high altitude, detouring to alternative airport enroute after points of no return, overcame all odds and successfully kindled the enthusiasm for general aviation in China and promoting much publicity for general aviation and general aviation education in China for people at all levels.

Based on our good example and discipline proving the possibility of GA flying in China with proper and efficient regulation, the door for general aviation is now opened in China for the first time in history and several special zones for GA is setting up and low airspace for GA is opening up. Similar to the economic modernisation of China many years ago, this move of setting up trial special zones and the gradual opening up of lower airspace is very good news for all for the development of GA and general aviation education .

Have a look at this if you want to see real achievement. A NTCA that did not exist a year and a half ago that circumnavigated the globe during the oshkosh convention. AFAIK these guys are not airline pilots (in fact its not their day job either) and also flew many hours over large expanses of nothing (PACIFIC etc)!
