Forget Houston. Rent a car and drive to San Antonio which will take you about 3 hours. Drive is pretty average. Find a downtown hotel on the Riverwalk, take a look at the Alamo, chill out at Durty Nellies pub, visit Six Flags or Sea World if you like that sort of thing. Eat great Mexican food at El Mercato (Spanish = 'el market' !), get tickets for a Spurs basketball game, drive out to Bandera or Fredricksburg, great little towns in the Texas Hill Country, catch some music at Flores Country Store especially if Willie Nelson is appearing....etc etc etc.
