Something trivial that's bugging me.

Quite frequently, possibly more often than not, when registering etc., you are asked to 'Confirm email' by entering it again. Why?

They don't ask for your postal address twice, so why email?

If your postal address is wrong there are enough people in the loop to probably get it delivered anyway (maybe not just at this moment), whereas you email is delivered by a machine which is dumb so the correct address is essential

Since I usually cut & paste the first one it's just a time waster.

I used to do that, but the confirmation's just to catch possible typos. If it wastes that much time you need a shorter address!

There is an old Irish saying...........To be sure, to be sure.

It's to be very sure they get the right address to spam later on.

If the firm is called Bloggs Software, then they get bloggssoftware@<hidden> as the address. It's amazing how often those addresses get spammed. I then set up a mail forwarder for the offending address, to the sales@<hidden> of the offending firm.

He's right you know; a couple of years ago I had to do some research at work regarding this very subject. Send for as many freebies etc as possible with a unique, disposable email address to identify exactly which companies were selling the email address onto spammers.

Very few of the freebies ever turned up but, without exception, every single one of the mailboxes got flooded with spam, despite a lot of the websites promising not to pass details onto third parties.....and opting out of such things via a tick box didnt seem to make any difference.

BTW, I read somewhere that using postmaster@<hidden> as an email address would backfire on the spammers but I never dug any deeper to find out why it might?

127.0.0.1 is the internal loop-back IP address of any PC. Sending an e-mail to this address is upposed to make it disappear up it's own
