I take it the deafning noise heard from my office block near Rwy 23 was an RAF VC-10 about 10 mins ago? Couldn't see anything but the ground shook!

Yes it was, according to online reports from TAS Manchester.

Was BOAC being ironic when the VC10 was promoted as "...swift, silent and serene"?!

(Perhaps it had only the passengers' experience in mind. And, yes, I know all jet aircraft then were noisier than today's!)

Fantastic aircraft, I agree, but I do wonder about the degree to which my fondness for the VC10 is related to the fact that my first three flights, starting in 1966, were on VC10s and had they been, say, on 707s whether I'd feel differently. I find it interesting that this aircraft can still capture my imagination, despite the fact that I've not flown on it in over 39 years! (And that only because the dispute between BOAC and its pilots over the introduction of the 747 meant that I flew on a VC10 rather than a 747!)

From an aesthetic point of view, a truly beautiful machine.

On Friday a VC10 was doing circuits at RAF Wittering.
