What is KL like to visit? Thanks

Hey

KL is an amazing city, i went there in September for a holiday before going back to uni.

It's old and new together, more hustle and bustle. I went to Singapore as well on the same holiday and the two cities are poles apart. Singapore is freakishly clean, whereas KL is more grittier i would say. Its more of a typical Asian city than Singapore.

Bukit Bintang is the main area, where all the shopping centres are, ranging from high class to then your metro centre type shopping centre with your typical high street stores. To then your more market stall type shopping centre.

Obviously the Petronas Towers you have to visit, though you need to go early in the morning as they only give away a certain amount of tickets a day. So be there before 9am to get tickets. Though KL Tower has better views of the city as the observation gallery is higher than the Petronas Towers. China Town is interesting too, and buy tickets for the hop on hop off bus.

The airport is quite a distance from the city about 1hr to 1hr30 drive away depending on traffic, so the KL Sentral train is quickest way into the city.

I would reccomend a visit to KL, though i did perfer Singapore.

I prefer KL. Singapore is too clean and clinical for me.

The old Expat bar area in KL used to be Bangsar, but its a bit far out of the city. Bukit Bintang is the main area in the city. Lots of good places to eat/drink. The Lekka Lekka cafe on the corner of Bukit Bintang and Jalan Ishmael is a great place to unwind. Lekka Lekka is an ice cream brand, but they also have this bar/cafe where you can have cocktails, dinner, sheeshas - and ice cream! It's a truly international establishement.

The Petronas towers are a bit of a letdown as you can only go up one tower as then only as far as the walkway, although the mall underneath is good if you like that sort of thing. The KL tower is much better. A good day out is getting a driver to take you to the Batu caves just to the north of the city. A fabulous place - also a Hindu shrine. Rainforest is also very close to the caves, so you can go for a bit of a wander.

As mentioned, get the train to the city as the taxis will rip you off.

Have fun in KL - it's one of my favourite places in the world.

This is a very exciting and different way to see KL. The Royal Selangor Flying Club operates from Sungai Besi Air Base a stones throw from the City Centre.
Visit their website for more details www dot r s f c dot com dot my

Need to make a booking a few days in advance.

You will see the Twin Towers from a unique viewpoint and also see real virgin jungle less that 10 minutes from the City.

Aircraft include C172 and R44.

On the ground the Golden Triangle includes the best in entertainment food and shopping. There's something for everyone.

This Sunday I will be watching the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at their Concert Hall in the Petronas Twin Towers. It will contain works composed and conducted by Carl Davis who composed a "Liverpool Oratorio" with Paul McCarthy, and probably a lot more better ones. Either way, first class entertainment.

Next door you can eat superb food for peanuts! Mind you the Malaysians do great things with peanuts.

You will enjoy KL.

KL is absolutely charming. Much less clinically sanitized than Singapore and way friendlier.

The TV/radio tower is an alternative to missing out on tickets to the Petronas Towers where the film Entrapment was shot featuring Sean Connery.

If you want a small-town alternative or have several days, grab a two- or three-hour coach ride down to Melaka (aka Malacca and other spellings) which has lots of colonial charm both Dutch and Portuguese. Nicest place you could take you want to snuggle up to.

Be sure to taste the "Tom Yam" too.

It's hard to be disappointed by KL, Melaka and pretty much anywhere else in Malaysia.

If you like straight talkers, read up on the still-influential ex-leader Dr. Mahathir. He's the sort of Muslim that threw open house in his ministerial palace at the end of Ramadan: anyone at all could turn up for free eats, no questions asked.

With a touch of luck, the world's largest flower may be in bloom. It's called the Rafflesia but you'd have to catch a quick flight to Eastern Malaysia on Borneo to get a chance to see one.

Enjoy!

Ah yes, the lovely Dr. Mahathir, without doubt one of the most corrupt and biggest crooks to be found throughout Malaysia.

A Chavez thread just got shut down so it is adventurous of me to reply here but I'm so glad that wherever you come from has nothing but clean politicians.

I was always certain of the theoretical possibility for the existence of such a species and I know one Finn who came close.

My direct experience of politicians in several countries has been however that honesty disqualifies you from shortlisting right off the bat.

What I'll say about Dr. Mahathir is that he speak his mind on the record regardless of the risk of appointment to somebody's hit list and that when he told the IMF to get stuffed during the 1997 Asian Crisis, that same IMF ended up admitting that his economic countermeasures helped Malaysia recover from that meltdown faster than elsewhere: the figs were there to prove it and only an arithmetical idiot such as the likes of I would've been qualified to deny it to the media with a straight face.

Happy Skyfuls of Clean Politics to Ya!

Arthur, you are being silly. I never said that I knew only of honest politicians, just that Mahathir is/was one of the most dishonest.

Endorse most of the above - super little city. The TV Tower actually achieves greater elevation than the Twin Towers (it's on top of a hill) and having a circular viewing gallery gives better 360 views. If it's clear enough ....... pollution and/or weather might block the view.
The Bird Park is also worth a visit if you like that kind of thing.

You don't clean any toilet without getting your hands dirty.

Anyone with real power won't give you a flakcatching job like president or minister until he (or she) has a control file on you, with all the dirty little things s/he's enticed you into, so that if you ever wanna go freelance on her/his agenda, elements of that file get leaked to the media and justice authorities.

Look at what happened to Chen in Taiwan, for example.

Or, closer to home, Nixon.

Helloooooo???!

The Bird Park is definitely not just for the birds!

(And beyond Tom Yam, the Garlic Buttered Shrimp is also tasty.)

KL - Nice, Fairly Cheap, Pretty open & a fair amount of inter-religion tolerance.

Can be a bit steamy if you've just arrived from North West European winter weather, so don't go crazy in your first 24 hours there......

If you get time, a visit to Time Sqaure is a must, not far from KLCC Station (right under the Petronas Towers). Its a large shopping center with an indoor Theme Park, thats if you into those things.
A trip up the KL Tower (Malaysia's version of the CN Tower in Canada) or the Petronas towers is a worth a visit.

And if your into spotting, KLIA has a few intresting areas to go.

KL is certainly not as sanitised as Singapore. Equally, I found there was less to do. It's OK for a couple of days, perhaps en-route to Penang or Langkawi, but unlike Singapore you'll run out of sights to see quite quickly. As otheras have said, Batu Caves, Petronas Towers, KL Tower (they're different, not to be confused with eachother). There's also a large and pleasant city park which hosts a couple of tourist type places to visit. A swing through the 'ethnic' districts and that's about that.

In the Jalan Bukit Bintang area there are two good watering holes called "The Ship"

Good steaks and cold beers!

@<hidden> S,

depend on what you mean as "lots to do". As a general rule, since KL with its surrounding area is a lot bigger than Singapore, then there r plenty more things to do.

if you are into photography, the Chinese and Indian Temples are a must, there are plenty of them around. And then there are the mosques; The Jame' mosque is a photgrapher's haven, and the Twin Towers modern mosque is no joke either. also don't miss the old train station, and dataran merdeka with the sultan abdul samad building. check out trey radcliffe's stuckincustoms.com for his treatment of many things KL.

i think you should visit, amongst others; petaling street (chinatown kl), masjid india street, brickfields, the islamic museum (next to the national mosque) and near the old train station, batu caves and do not miss walking through the jungle within the city - Bukit Nanas, which is like 10 minutes walk from the Twin Towers.

also, some nice tropical waterfalls are just a short travel away, there's the Genting Highlands 45 minutes away up the mountain if you want a casino and just much, much more. what i'm saying is that there r just so many things to do, if u know where to go.

try to get hold of the expat community here or helpful locals via the net. use google. it's the same as visiting everywhere else. if you get those who know the city to bring you around, the experience wd be all the richer.

Also, must visit this website -- Blog For Federal Territory (http://www.blog4ft.com) . It's where the people of Malaysia blog about the city. It is the best web resource for those wanting to visit Kuala Lumpur.

Ta!
