Any recommendations?
Not New York (about an hour away by train), but I had good experiences at Princeton Airport, including doing a BFR and renting aircraft to do the Hudson River VFR corridor several times.

Just after my PPL in OBA, I went up to NYC, and wanted to fly out to Martha's Vineyard to pick up my GF. I rented an Archer and safety pilot at Farmingdale, and flew up to get her. The guys there at the school were quite helpful, no hassle and they do a really good Sunday brunch in the restaurant.
I also seen the plane the 9/11 terrorists used for familiarization flights (got photos) and it was there tied in chains w/ tires cut!
