View Full Version : Acts from the 80s, who are cool (again).

(Roj, thats the 1980s mate :ok:)

This is a self indulgent odyssey - forgive me. Which acts have stood the 25 year test of time?

For starters, let me offer Simple Minds. Forever the whipping boys to U2, they did some great stuff. Tears for Fears too, haven't they stood the test of time well and I am only now, less than uneasy about allowing my offspring sift through pop's CD collection.

YouTube - The Adventures - Broken Land (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87PMeLEHISA)

.. and perhaps the most under rated band of the lot?

YouTube - Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXsmyLtpxlA)

YouTube - Talk Talk - LIVING IN ANOTHER WORLD - 1986 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAlLQaDXc4I&feature=related)

.. well, perhaps not all the collection is available for scrutiny - not just yet.

YouTube - If you were here tonight-Alexander O'neal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpmdNqRhhR0)

Drifting off thread before the thread even starts, didn't U2 do some fabulous stuff?

Sprogget,

With a mug of cocoa in my hand, on my father's lap, I watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. That doesn't make me an astronaut. :=

One of the best songs of the 80s. Although, not cool. Yet. But it will be.

Maybe.

Pah! Bearing in mind the thread title, Don Henley was only ever cool for four or five years up until '76 at best & certainly not after punk. That eighties schtick was strictly for spotty youths who are no longer youths but still spotty and have well worn copies of Top Gun, Days of Thunder & An officer & a gentleman perched atop the VCR.:=

To me, that song is formulaic 80's pop & I certainly don't remember them. I prefer bands that blazed a trail, not followed the pack:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HUMh8GQnDW8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HUMh8GQnDW8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And these. best British band of the last twenty five years. There is no question of that, a massive legacy. You know your musical legacy is secure when you're asked onto Newsnight to deny rumours of a reunion....

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/e6QnK0yql8s&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/e6QnK0yql8s&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And if that weren't enough, things got warm at the end of the decade...

Great last two, this works for me.

Fabulous.. its like the tide coming in, slowly but relentlessly.. wave after wave.. getting stronger and stronger. They couldn't hold a beat if their lives depended on it, but who cared? Brilliant memories.

And always cool. But now a bit fat. A bit of a stalkers anthem too. Scary.

And this. The very best night out I ever had was in the Hacienda, shortly before it finally ran out of New Order's cash.

This song reminds me of taking my mate's wife to see him in hospital after he got shot. We parked up by the Autobahn and I found a bottle of Martini in the boot.

It's interesting to me that the 80's are widely held up as the decade music forgot & yet the kids are now sampling tunes widely from then & having hits.

There was always good stuff around, just as there is now - the trick, as ever is to separate the wheat from the chaff. Spandau Ballet were great in the early days. ABC, Human League - Sheffield had it stitched up for a while

British rock & pop has always been strong throughout the decades, but the 80's was really all about the advent of technology, samplers, synths, drum machines - remember 808 state? They were named after a drum machine - the Linn 808 IIRC.

But for me, the back end of the decade was absolutely stormed by Manchester, it was where all of the really, really good stuff was coming from - The Roses, Happy Mondays, Durutti Column, Joy Division & then New Order, Northside, Wonder Stuff, the Inspiral Carpets, The Smiths. At the time, it was dismissed as student music, but a very great deal of it has stood the test of time, especially the Stone Roses & The Smiths.:ok:

A one hit curio...

For 6 months, I worked in a hotel in a region where all the best bands stayed. I got to see ABC, H17 (great act), Human League, Teardrop Explodes, Spandau Ballet, Haircut 100, Gillan (!), The Mighty WAH!, AFoS etc. Good times.

YouTube - Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa8gYL_SC9o)

One of the greatest lost bands of the period.

YouTube - The Faith Brothers - Stranger on Home Ground In-Concert 1985 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE8-wGeOthg&feature=PlayList&p=1251308960492FE2&index=0&playnext=1)

The Manchester scene for me, didn't come into its own until the early/mid 90s when the Charlatans mellowed a bit. James can hardly put a foot wrong in my book and bands like Oasis of course, and especially (for me) Gomez carried things on although there seems to be a void at the moment. This is an almost genius incidental post script to the period.

YouTube - ELECTRONIC GETTING AWAY WITH IT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSP1EPfXxsQ&feature=related)

What lyrics.

Korgis - yes.. good one off curio that. A bit like this weird thing.

I listened to that album (Big Generator) recently - it's pretty mental, like Yes went so deep in to "commercial" they came out the other side. Ol' Jon isn't doing half bad for a milkman from Accrington, Lancashire. In case anyone doubts whether they are cool again, check this out:

MXNve99gG_I

If you go and see Simple Minds on their upcoming tour, be sure to get there in time for the opening act: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). I saw them a couple of years ago, and they were pretty amazing. They were weird in the 80s in that they were supposedly a "synth band", but used real instruments too. They even managed to make a Mellotron sound funky, which is deserving of respect. :ok:

ps: Moby thinks they're cool:

Al R, top tunes nominated but like all of us you have one blind spot. Talk Talk....pllleeeaaassssee, gotta be the most pretentious band of all time and sum up the dark side of the 80's.

I'll throw these into the mix:

YouTube - The Chameleons - Don't Fall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr3-4CNzM0I) One of the most underrated bands of the area/era.

YouTube - Echo and The Bunnymen - Over The Wall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPmLhxaEvG8) Fantastic live

YouTube - REM - So. Central Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ykp0Vq77IBw) When Stipe had hair

YouTube - Hoodoo Gurus - What's My Scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugA5bLqivkY) Cracking Aussie noise

How can the 80's be caned when it produced The Smiths, New Order, REM, Stone Roses, U2, inspirations all to the likes of the Killers today.

Have to agree with Sprogget, with regards the arse end of the 80s.
FAC 51 was the place to be of a weekend, or even Konspiracy if you prefered 'proper' seedy and a can of Red Stripe, listening to the likes of The Roses, James, Inspiral Carpets, etc.

Being a Manc, I may be a little biased, but living there when it was all going off was top banana. Even Gio Goi relaunched recently and they were the mutts knuts at the time. Anthony told me...;)

Happy Mondays for me though. Bunch of idiots, but some top tunes.
