Hope the Mods don't mind this plug, but it's a great event.

Rescheduled this year from Saturday to Sunday so it doesn't clash with the SVAS Ken Wallis Lecture. It means we can have a full weekend of old aeroplane heaven!

2009 HAA SYMPOSIUM. RAF MUSEUM, HENDON. Sunday 15th November.

Keynote speaker: WW2 ‘Bismarck’ Swordfish pilot, Lt Cmdr. John Moffatt (ret’d)

This year’s Historic Aircraft Association Symposium is being held at the RAF Museum, Hendon on Sunday 15th November. The theme of the Centennial of Naval Aviation may seem like a clash of cultures given the location.

But...as with previous HAA events, its prime aim is to give members and guests the chance to meet and share in the passion of pilots and engineers from every field and era of flying.

The keynote speaker at the 2009 Symposium is John Moffat. He flew the Fairey Swordfish in perhaps the most hazardous of any combat conditions, including the famed attack on the battleship Bismarck.

However his zeal for flying extends from his first solo in a Tiger Moth seven decades ago, till his recent retirement as a flying instructor on the eve of his 90th birthday.

Other speakers include former de Havilland test pilot Desmond Penrose, giving first-hand experience of flight testing the Sea Vixen fighter. Group Captain Tom Eeles will explain how an RAF pilot adapted to both carrier-borne flying and the quirks of the Blackburn Buccaneer.

Also joining the speaking line-up for the day-long event are Commander Sue Eagles RN, speaking on the Centennial of Naval Aviation and Harry Haas of the European Federation of Historic Aviation.

The real joy though, of the HAA Symposium is about simply spending a day with fellow pilots, engineers and enthusiasts, including current and past members of the RNHF and BBMF. There will also be a book-signing event at lunchtime, several authors present.

Tickets for the day including private buffet lunch, cost £20 for HAA members or £25 for non-members.
