A Canadian military helicopter pilot with a sudden hankering for hamburgers set his aircraft down on a Kenora, Ont., baseball diamond, and walked into an A&W restaurant across the street for a takeout order.

"He ordered four papa burgers with cheese combos and two papa burgers on the side," server Stacey Hawes told CBC News on Thursday.

The pilot was nice and polite, and made it seem as if he was just driving a regular car, she added.

Laura Madison was in her house in Kenora when she heard the whirring noise of the helicopter blades just down the street. When she looked out her window, she couldn't believe her eyes.

"It's a huge double-door … helicopter, which you don't see landing in the middle of town every day," Madison said. "He went in and got some A&W takeout and took off. So we're laughing because it was the strangest drive-thru we've ever seen."

The only reason for the BAOR Navexes to Wurzburg was the VIP "H" was between the Burger King and the PX. You could not only get a proper burger (a rarity in the late 80's) but throw a couple of those cheap nasty Huffy Mountain Bikes in on the way back.

In the mid 90s I had the following related to me by a meterologist at Stornoway.

(By way of explanation, and for those readers unfamiliar with the gentle ways of the Western Isles, at this time, due to Church sensitivities, there were no scheduled flights or sailings to or from Stornoway on Sundays. As such the Sunday papers didn't arrive until Monday.)

It had been the practice for the Stornoway SAR crew's Sunday morning ex to include a landing at Ullapool where they stocked up on Sunday newspapers. This persisted until the Church elders found out about the practice, whereupon it stopped.

Thankfully there are now both flights and ferries to Stornoway on Sundays, Sunday newspapers can be read on Sunday, some pubs even open, and the world hasn't ended.

Anyone remember the Einbeck bratty? We used to land a whole flight in the field opposite whilst on exercise, the lady who ran it put extra bratties on the grill when she heard us coming. The looks on some of the other customers faces was priceless. Ahh those were the days :ok:
