TBSC 30th September 2009, 18:36 Serbia's JAT Airways flights grounded (http://www.newsday.com/business/serbia-s-jat-airways-flights-grounded-1.1487424)
Fleet is grounded as maintenance organization stopped serving them.
ASFKAP 30th September 2009, 22:32 A real shame, the JAT Techniks guys were really shafted when JAT cast them adrift. They're a very capable outfit with fairly impressive facilities there and the sort of in-house capability no longer found in many other European airlines these days. I was there recently and the staff hadn't been paid for months, yet still they turned up on time for work every day and did a very professional job.
I met some people there who were interested in taking over the facilities or putting together a joint venture with them but were hamstrung by the bureaucrats and government officials who were more interested in their 'kickback' than trying to rescue the facility......:ugh:
CargoOne 1st October 2009, 07:47 I'm wondering what journo means by
Most of JAT Airways' 16 aircraft are outdated and the company has not had the financial means to buy new planes.
JAT fleet is ATR42/72 and 737-300/400. Like many other airlines in Europe and elsewhere.
JAT Airways are nice people to deal with, although a bit buerocratic.

Sounds pretty clear to me, but if it needs spelling out: JAT's fleet is getting on a bit.
The 737s date back to the mid-80s and the ATRs are coming up for 20 years old. JAT's been wanting a new fleet for years (remember the A319s which never appeared?)
ASFKAP 1st October 2009, 11:43 And with JAT Techniks looking after them they'll be good for at least another twenty years....

Isn't that the truth ASFKAP.. usually that's the point of issue that kills many a project. :{

411A 1st October 2009, 13:14 Hmmm, sounds like a sub-service carrier might be in the cards....one that knows which palms to grease, and when.:}
ATC Watcher 1st October 2009, 17:28 Absolutely ! What about Serbia air ? with 2 Irish leased A320s ?:ok: Bets are open.

What odds are you giving on a couple of Tristars.....?
TBSC 2nd October 2009, 09:31 It seems that nothing changed. The only flight operated today is a BEG-LHR with an Aviogenex B732.
EagleStar 2nd October 2009, 12:54 JAT Airways said Friday it will resume flights later in the day after a deal was reached with a maintenance company over unpaid bills. :)

Charlie Roy 2nd October 2009, 13:33 The carrier said earlier Friday that is is losing euro500,000 ($726,950) per day
It ain't looking good though is it...
davidjohnson6 2nd October 2009, 14:19 Charlie - JAT is essentially part of the Serbian state. Furthermore, as Serbia is not a member of the EU, the EU rules over state subsidies do not apply.
EagleStar 2nd October 2009, 15:52 Interesting that Macedonian Airlines, who were supposed to be taken over by JAT, have now lost their AOC and are also grounded.
