There was an off-airport landing near the Hospital at Moruya on Friday night. A Mooney 201, not too much damage but it nearly ended up in the River. Anyone know what happened? All ok I hope.

Looks like they just parked it there...tied down, cover on...

Must have been a fairly nice landing

Looks like the right wing leading edge snagged something on the way through.

in my self proclaimed expert crash analysis, the problem is simply one of limited visibility..
why fly IFR under the hood when you can leave the external IFR window covering fitted! only they forgot to remove IFR covers on short final, and mistook the tree line for a hangar.

simple.

Looks like an absolutely brilliant job by the pilot. Cannot wait for the restart of the gear up/down debate in these situations...

Yak-slapped, that is new technology on the Mooney "S" model where S stands for leading edge spoiler.

That patch of water would have been coming up awfully quick, I bet they were relieved when they pulled up.

I was told no one was injured and the Pilot was ok after landing....

What's to debate?

Look at how close it came to going into the lake/river! What might the outcome have been had it flipped going down the bank, and gone into the river upside down with the door jammed closed?

Good outcome regardless!

I was about 15nm to the West of Latrobe Valley on Fri afternoon when I heard the pilot of Mooney VH-JHH give a PAN call on 124.0. He said he'd lost oil pressure but the oil temp was reading OK, and his intention was to return to Moruya.

He sounded quite calm about the situation, and ML Centre responded professionally as you would expect. I had to change to CTAF not long after so I was unaware of the outcome until I saw this topic. Sounds like it was not just a faulty gauge, and give some of the terrain around Moruya, a good outcome. I would speculate it was en-route to Canberra at the time.

It was very close to the river and at night. There is a fair drop down to the water so it probably would have gone in exactly as you describe. The result could easliy have been a lot worse.

Geez, long way to go after loss of oil pressure.
Glad all came out ok:ok:

I believe Ovation was 15nm from Latrobe, not the Mooney.

Great outcome, particularly as he put it down near a hospital. :ok:

I can't wait for the usual suspects to start debating whether or not he stalled :ugh:

Rumour is it was precautionary due to loss of oil pressure but would have been forced if left much longer...
