GFC oooohhh GFC! Thats the answer for everything these days. Next time someone asks you a question tell them "well it's because of the GFC." Not wanting to look stupid they will agree with you that yes the fridge seals are broken because of the GFC. This is my long introduction to my question.

Am i correct in saying that the reason things are sucky in GA at the moment is primarily because the majors have stopped hiring/expanding?(Wait hold on don't just say GFC!) Are there other contributing factors? If yes what are they? If not will a return to hiring/expansion in the majors indicate an eventual return to the happy days? I realise that the last few years were unusually prosperous in GA.

The reason i ask is that there has been a lot of talk recently about things getting better in the worlds economy "Green shoots (sp?)" and all that. If things are getting better (fingers crossed) airlines will again start their hiring/expansion again, but does this mean GA will be rosy?

The short answer is yes.
The slightly longer answer is, it'll take a while.

1. Those green shoots are very early days. The stock market has shown signs of a recovery since March but it tends to leads the real economy by at least 12 months, if not more. (eg. the market bottomed out in March 09 but unemployment is expected to peak in the second half of CY2010)

2. Airlines lag the rest of the economy because airline travel (be it corporate or personal) is one of the first things scaled back and one of the last things recommenced. You're going to have to wait for the general economy to build a bit of momentum in a return to growth before companies will be happy to send their employees travelling again.

3. Airlines like QAN and VBA will be happy to squeeze current resources for as long as possible in any future upturn before hiring again. An insider at QAN recently told me that once the scaling back is complete and the business starts to grow again the airline may look at expanding by at least 10% before hiring.
When airlines go to the effort of slashing CASKs as much as they are currently they will want to maintain that for as long as possible.

So yeah it will recover but it'll take a while (longer than most other professions unfortunately).

Don't worry, once they start hiring again Jetstar or Qantas won't be hiring anyone from within the Qantas group anymore as a result of this new legislation so the platter will be free for GA entrants!!

Well Wiz you're right! As far as i can tell there are only two real issues out there GFC, and GW! Either is a viable answer to just about any problem!

Seriously though...So the only real problem facing GA (as far as jobs is concerned) is the lack of expansion/hiring up the top end of the industry? That's kinda comforting. Cool.
