Hello, can somebody point me in the right direction about where I can do a PT6 theory course (as a pilot, not LAME)? It should be one approved by Pratt&Whitney. If is possible to do that by correspondence it would be much much better. Thanks.

Suck Squeeze Bang Blow... :ok:
Thats all i know about the Garretts I fly. Have you done systems ATPL yet? It will cover most of the turbine knowledge otherwise i'd just wait for the aircraft endorsement..

Avfacts ATPL - Study Texts (http://www.aviationshop.com.au/avfacts/Study_texts.htm)
Try rob avery's BGT course aswell.

Why bother apart from self interest?

Once you do an aircraft endorsement that utilizes the PT6 it will cover everything you need to know.

A handy little tit bit is ST.R.I.F.E (Starter, RPM, Ignition, Fuel Flow, EGT) if you can commit that to memory it will come in handy when doing your Aircraft endorsement.

As mentioned by starting out ATPL systems will give you what you require in regards to a BGT understanding.

IMO you're better off learning about the Garrett, much more of a Pilots engine :}

Thanks guys, but attending the course is a requirement of the operator for insurance purposes. It should be one approved by the manufacturer.

I'm happy with the turbine... hate having to salute the garrett but i'll live. Nibbo why does the Initial Type Rating not count towards the insurance they would have to cover the PT6 in there? What country are you in?

Hear hear........ much nicer engine I reckon. No taxiing at full noise like the Garret. :E

nibbio.

It should be one approved by the manufacturer.

I don't believe Pratt & Whitney either "approve" a course for pilots or have an "approved" course for pilots. Also CASA no longer have a BGT course as a pre requisite to a turbine aircraft endorsement.

I suggest you call Pratts and ask for a Field Service Engineer:

Pratt & Whitney Canada (A'Asia) Pty Ltd
Phone: (07) 3268 0000
30 Industry Crt
Eagle Farm QLD 4009

Many years ago they used to produce excellent free pilot literature, including turbine engine theory and handling notes for each class of engine. No idea if that is still the case.

Pratt & Whitney did run pilot's courses in years gone by (did mine at the Papuan Hotel in POM in 1982).

Whilst BGT is no longer a requirement, it is very useful to have some knowledge of why things are done a certain way, and there are differences between PT-6's and Garrets or Allisons.

Although I doubt that he runs pilot courses, "Mr PT6" MR PT6 MAINTAINENCE AND REPAIR SPECIALISTS - BRISBANE AUSTRALIA (http://mrpt6.com/) has an encyclopaedic knowledge of this engine, as does Ray Williams at P & W.

About 70% rpm actually with only a dash of torque. If we put speeds high and gave it some gravy you'd know about it!

Most of the conversions on otters are going for the Garrett over the PT6 these days :)

That should say something!

Most of the conversions on otters are going for the Garrett over the PT6 these days

That would be single Otters (DHC-3). A few are also being fitted with Walther turbines.

Not uncommon for Walter turbines retrofitted to FU24's in NZ to let go at an inopportune moment.

G'day mate, Standard Aero near Bankstown in Sydney run a PT6 course for pilots. I'm a LAME and just did the PT6 type course with them... it was excellent. What they don't know about PT6's is not worth knowing! Hope this helps?

PWC PT6A Pilot Engine Management Course's Courses commencement dates will start on the following Monday
at the conclusion of each scheduled PWC PT6A CASA approved Engine Licencing Course.
(Refer to the above course dates to determine your Pilot training dates)

Pete Mahaffy was with Hawker Pacific for many years as a ground instructor and did the Pilot and engineers ground school on the PT-6, Garrets and Allison's.

Worth getting hold of the Rolls Royce book and having a read and also some of the aviation publications like Professional Pilot, Business and Commercial Aviation and the American AOPA do have very good articles on turbine engines and associated systems.

Could never figure out why Pilots only did a week on the ground school and yet the engineers got two weeks at ground school. I always put it down to pilots being twice as smart as the engineers.

And now most of those same FU24's are being re-retrofitted to -27 PT6's, saying something perhaps...
