Bush Flying in South America

Hello Pilots,

I am just curious an would like to ask you a question.

In the Africa Forum, nearly every week pops up a new Thread about Bush flying. Maun, Namibia etc.

The people chat, talk about theyr experience. So I when I read those threads, I thought there might be the same threads in the latin America Forum.

But obviously, there is no Bushflying in southamerica?
I thought in southamerica are so many small Aircraft Companys?

AM I wrong? No Bush Flying in South America?

Sure there is. Can't comment on the quantity though, compared to Africa.

Differences are:
1) Most of the bush flying is dominated by locals, rather than expats.
2) Some of the bush flying is done by missionaries. I expect that they do internet chatter, probably on different websites though.
3) Seemingly, the web forum community is not as active in Latin America as it is in other parts of the world.

I don't know about the rest of South America, but there's plenty of bush flying in Brazil, known as "garimpo", mostly in remote areas, it's usually one of the first jobs for new pilots, and if you can hack it, the rewards are pretty good. But, as Panama Jack says, it's locals only.

I know a good friend of mine is flying in Boliva. I met him a few years ago in Miami. By then he told me that flying in South America is much more fun then Africa. After that I lost contact with him.

Do you know some missionaries companys down there? He might flying with those!?

Hi amigos:

I'm a Norwegian citizen but was raised and flew 10 years as a bush pilot in Bolivia. The flying was based in the city of Cochabamba and we flew missionaries, social development organizations, tourists, businessmen, politicians, etc. to all the regions of the country varying from 14000 feet(above sea level) airstrips to jungle airstrips at sea level. Those were definately good years which I count a great priviledge. I'm currently back in Norway initiating a job flying business charter. :hmm: Now I know what is that C-172 with a "N" registration doing in the northeast part of Nicaragua!!! ....but, shhhhhh!!!!, nobody knows about them!!!.
I guess that they´re trying to mantain a low profile to avoid the hassle of dealing with the communist retards of INAC.:yuk: (Panama Jack knows what I mean, for sure)

The other day I saw this documentary about the "jungle" flying in Brasil. It was awesome!. Most of the pilots get paid with gold!, and some of the strips they fly to are just insane!. There was a pilot who was flying a C-185. He put 5 or six guys in the plane sitting on the cabins floor.
Did you do some of that kind of flying?

And for all the missionaries out there (some of them very good friends of mine) You guys are in my prayers! Bravo! :D

I flew for an outfit in Georgetown, Guyana called Air Services Ltd and we flew to Lethem very often. There I met a guy from the US flying a N registered 206 into various parts of Guyana but I don't remember the name of the outfit.
