If you hold a Full ATPL there are five steps:
CPL Air Law Theory Exam
ATPL Air Law Theory Exam
Instrument Rating Theory Exam (IREX)
CPL Flight test
Instrument Rating Flight test.

Must do CPL Air Law first.
Must do IREX before Instrument Rating Flight test.

IREX probably the most difficult of these. The Air Law exams are open book and you can refer to Australian AIP, Orders and Regulations.

Do I need Certificate of validation?

No requirement, a Certificate of Validation allows you to Fly on your Overseas Licence for up to 3 months. Useful if you are doing a Type Rating for example in Australia before return home.
If you a remaining in Australia you need to convert.
A Certificate of Validation may allow you to start work while you are converting your licence. Other than that no need.

How long does it take to do the 5 steps?

One day at a time....
CPL Air Law about 3 or 4 days study then exam.
ATPL Air Law allow another day or two then exam.
IREX allow about 2 weeks to study (this one is more difficult).
Flight test as soon as you are ready and can arrange.
Allow yourself between one and three months. Just arrange all the security check ASIC card etc first.

rit, from another of your recent posts: http://www.pprune.org/professional-pilot-training-includes-ground-studies/381359-australian-ppl-cpl-options.html#post5101338

I am now B737 pilot but consider change to a builder http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/badteeth.gif as I am still after Australian license and waiting for a pilot job in Melbourne.haha

Can I recommend a building contractor to you instead ?

IF that is the case, then it would suggest the plan is to gain permanent residency in Australia using the Skilled Visa route. IF this is true, then I strongly suggest a good look at the immigration website as Pilot is no longer on the list i.e. you won't get your 60 points. It doesn't matter if you've already started the process or not; if they take your skill off the list the day before the issue of the visa in your passport, then it's a no-go.

I think there are plenty of builders looking for jobs at the moment too. Doctor or nurse and you're safe :ok:

Irex is similar to the EASA radio nav EXAM, but more difficult
