View Full Version : DG834G v1 versus WLAN access point

As posted previously I have a second wireless access point covering the garden and which is connected via ethernet over mains back to my BT Home Hub. My venerable old Netgear DG834G v1 works a treat in its new life, with range and signal strength on its boggo standard stub antenna to the 802.11G devices that access it that far exceeds the borrowed new RangeMax draft N access point with a gazillion "intelligently switching" antennae that I trialled.

I do though have a question; given that the DG834Gv1 is actually a wireless ADSL modem router and not just an access point, it is continually searching for the (non existent) ADSL connection. This will take some CPU, as will any related "unnecessary" things that it's doing as a result.

Given that the wireless performance is excellent and I don't want to lessen it, could I likely get other benefit from switching to a 802.11G WLAN access point and putting the DG834G v1 back in the drawer?
