Licensing Decline

Just been having a read of the Licensing section of CASA and came across the figures at the bottom (Civil Aviation Safety Authority - Licensing requirements (http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD:1970376754:pc=PC_90019)).

What I noticed was a clear trend in the number of pilots (aeroplanes only) each year, albeit it only goes to 2006 but one would believe that the trend would continue.

2001 - 35831
2002 - 31395
2003 - 30676
2004 - 30390
2005 - 29786
2006 - 28744

That's a decline of 7000 odd licences or about 1200 a year!

Have a look at 2008, the year of the sausage factory particularly in NZ :}

And I would think that a fair proportion of the new CPLs issued per year would be foreign students from India and China. It's also interesting to note that the number of ATPL holders are double the number of CPL holders.

In the mid 80's I thought there was around 50,000 pilots in Australia , if so it has already halved in 20 years

It would be interesting to compare with numbers of RAAus pilots over the same time span.
