I am looking at starting training towards a PPL/NPPL next year and have been costing these courses at schools in North West England. I had not heard of NPPL before, but having read about it understand that it is cheaper than a JAA PPL (as it takes less hours), but can be converted to a JAA PPL after its completion. Is an NPPL going to save me any money in getting a PPL or will the saving be offset by the cost of upgrading it?

Also . . . I started some flying training about ten years ago and have about ten hours recorded in a log book somewhere. Does anyone know if these hours would count towards any qualifications I seek in the future?

If you're going for the JAR PPL, go straight for it. No matter which way you do it, the requirements for the PPL are the same, so by doing the NPPL you are just wasting money on skills tests, licence issue fees etc.
