The record for falling without a parachute and surviving is rumoured to be around 40,000 feet by a female Russian fighter pilot in World War II. Fir trees on a steep, snow covered slope reputely broke her fall.

I read the story about the WWII survivor, except it was a Tail gunner out of a Lancaster, and HE even gave his account in the story.
