View Full Version : Mentors, mentoring and the PPRuNe Fund

Now that the fund is building, albeit very slowly at the moment, I am keen to gather interest from Training Captains, Senior Captains and line Captains, as well as senior FO's, with a training background, who are willing to become mentors to the PPRuNe wannabes, and who are willing to put something back into aviation.

If you are not aware of the scheme, briefly, it is designed to give individual support to those who are selected to receive it. A system of selection has already been devised and mentors would be matched to those chosen to receive it. The range of mentors might also cover the whole route into courses and licences. I would also hope that we might get some interest from mentors with a good background in the US, or from US pilots themselves.

Mentoring could, perhaps, be done from a register, which would indicate how much time and contact a mentor is prepared to give. This could include advice via e-mail as well as personal contact from time to time. I would also hope that mentors could arrange jump seat trips to enhance their knowledge on a live flight deck.

The ultimate purpose is to select wannabes who show committment, aptitude, dedication - and above all motivation. This will demanded throughout the whole of their mentoring period.

The final process of selection can lead directly to financial assistance from the PPRuNe Fund, it's ONLY purpose, to help them on their way to a career in an airline.

I will be in touch with many airlines over the coming weeks to seek their help and encouragement, both financial and with a view to accepting and/or sponsoring a PPRuNe wannabe who has demonstrated to his peers a burning desire to enter the profession.

If you wish to help please get in touch with me by e-mail, when I will give you a better idea of how the scheme will work.

Thanks

IFR

Can't I persuade a few more good and true el capitanos and RHS's to join in looking after our young 'uns?

Even the guys who, like me, have retired, your expertise can still be of immense benefit. Am I the only one?

All those guys who offered before, where are you?

With all the flight deck talent we have on PPRuNe and I can get only six or seven who are willing to help wannabes? Is that it?

Surely not. Come on guys, these folk need you. Just like you needed someone when you were climbing the ladder to your licences.

You can e-mail me too.

How about 'Boss Talent'? -I am always happy to try and help/inform wherever possible from an industry view point and as an ex-ATPL (...it has ceased to be!).

PS. only prob is people can go onto 'gizza job' mode and that can be a little difficult for the mentor...

I would recommend Boss Raptor as an excellent mentor for the wannabes scheme. He gave me some sound advice not long ago - thanks Boss!

Just to let you know BR, the bank overturned the original decision and are now going to lend me the money for my CPL.

Thanks again for your advice.

VFE.

C'mon folks, help out

Here at my US Major we have over 1000 of the pilots volunteering in the Mentor Program, not to mention all the help from Colleges and Flight schools.

Doesn't hurt...

As a Wannabe with a long way to go this Mentoring idea would be nice,I don`t know about other people but I certainly wouldn`t be pestering you for a job. It`s just that it would be nice to hear experiences from some of the people who have got to where we are trying to get.....even if it means buying you a beer on the rare occasions I ever get away from those ATPL books. :)

Rest assured, I have some good people lined up to help the scheme. I want some more, the more the merrier in fact, because it would reduce the demand on those so far willing.

However, I am very thankful that some genuinely talented flight deck Captains and Trainers have already voluntered themselves, and together with, no doubt, some of our OWN PPRuNe talent.

When I am able to proceed, with sufficient funds in the bank for one thing, I will get it under way. The basic plan is drawn and I will distribute that in the next few weeks.

Anymore Captains please? Anymore FO's with a training background? Anyone who wants to put something back into aviation?

I am at your beck and call.

I am but a lowly effoh, but I fly a Jet Provost if that would help in any way? For the cost of fuel, I would gladly take wannabees up and chat about the route to the best job in the world. My way to 'the best job in the world' was via instructing-if that helps also.

IFR, I think that the 'Boss Mentoring' programme as suggested by BR would be a good idea ... after all, it's the 'bosses' that make the final decision over a wannabe's employment at the end of the day! Added to that, don't forget that an airline requires an awful lot of people beside pilots to make it work... :D :D :D

The Guvnor?

Mentoring?

Why am I reminded of the scene from Oliver where we meet Fagin for the first time??

Well, I would volunteer to mentor someone, but I am only a newbie jet F/O with 1000 hours instructing behind me. :(

Oleo, you were one of two or three who suggested a mentoring scheme, and you have a recent wannabe view of how it is. Please e-mail me.

I would still like a few more top of the tree aces please. I have 15 willing mentors so far and I would love to get it to 20. That would be just about right. :)
