VANCOUVER — At least 15 people were injured when an Air Canada plane flying from Sydney, Australia, to Vancouver ran into severe turbulence early Friday morning.
Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said Flight 34, with 256 passengers and 17 crew, was just over an hour east of Honolulu when it encountered turbulence related to thunderstorms in the area.
While Air Canada said 15 passengers were injured, a spokesman for the western Pacific region of the Federation Aviation Administration said 22 people suffered injuries.
Ian Gregor said they included 19 passengers and three crew members.
“The pilot diverted to Honolulu and initial reports are that four passengers were taken to hospital,” Gregor said. “I don't know the extent of their injuries.”
Fitzpatrick said the captain decided to return to Honolulu and the Boeing 777-200 LR landed without incident around 1 a.m. local time (7 a.m. ET).
He said nine passengers and two flight attendants suffered minor injuries, were treated at the scene and were allowed to continue on their journey.
But two other passengers and two flight attendants were taken to a local hospital and have since been released.
Fitzpatrick said the two passengers will fly to Vancouver on Friday night.
The plane was checked over by mechanics and departed about two hours after the incident.

(I wonder if the turbulence switch was ON :O)
