Folks.

I'm flying with Thai Airways from LHR to SYD via BKK in July. I've flown with them before, but never been over the luggage limit.

Due to recent developments since booking (got some extra sh*t to take), this time I'm gonna be a good few kilos over. I only get 20kgs on my economy one-way ticket, so does anyone know the score on excesses for this route?

Ta.

According to Thai Airways' website,Passengers traveling on economy class are given a free baggage allowance of two pieces. The weight of each item shall not exceed 23 kgs (50 lbs) and linear measurement of each piece shall not exceed 158 linear cms (62 inches).So it looks as though you actually get 46kg, not 20kg. But I'd be surprised if this was actually true, as it's extremely generous.

If your ticket states 20kg then I'd give your local Thai office a call just to be sure.

Thai Airways Luggage Allowance, Baggage Allowance, Thai Airways, Flights to Thailand, Flights to Bangkok, Cheap flights to Thailand (http://www.thaiairways.co.uk/pages/flying_with_thai/luggage.htm)

The checked baggage allowance for Royal First Class is 40 kgs, Royal Executive Class 30 kgs and Economy Class 20 kgs. Surplus weight over the baggage allowance will be charged at the standard excess baggage rate.

Royal Orchid Plus Gold members are entitled to check in an additional 20 kgs;
Royal Orchid Plus Silver members an additional 10kgs.

Infants (not occupying a seat) shall be allowed 10 kgs, excluding 1 fully collapsible child stroller, pushchair or infant-carrying basket.

Children are entitled to the same free baggage allowance as adult passengers.

Each passenger may carry, without additional charges, one piece of hand baggage suitable for placing under the seat in front or in the closed overhead rack, provided that the carry-on baggage has a maximum length of 56 cms (22 inches), width 45cms (18 inches) and 25 cms (10 inches). However, the sum of the three dimensions shall not exceed 115 cms (45 inches) and the weight must not exceed 7 kgs.

Excess rates would be very expensive all the way through to SYD, so you'd be better airfreighting it with a specialist company. :ok:

Might be worth looking through the threads on the Thai thread on flyer talk.

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus - FlyerTalk Forums (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thai-airways-royal-orchid-plus-503/)

Think the odd couple of k over might be Ok.

Typically excess baggage is 1% of the one way first class fare per kilo. That said I would call Thai to check. When you do enquire about prebooking (and prepaying) excess baggage - some airlines do that and it's cheaper. Otherwise investigate someone like Sevenseas.

WRT the different free allowances quoted above I think you'll find that the 2 piece each 23k only applies to tickets that start, end or pass through the USA. Therefore in your case 20k will apply.
