looks like Gloster meteor or something like that ie. single seat fighter, 1950's era. (and no, I'm not putting money on it :}).

I was thinking DC3 at first however it has retracts and the wheels would either be out in the open or away in the fuse, so there would be no need for those cover things. They don't make sense.

Not a meteor as they were Jet powered and this thing looks to clearly have had piston jobbies and you can see where the engine mounts were by the look of it.

WELL DONE FRIS!

DC-3C 5W-FAA, Western Samoa's (now Independent Samoa) first registered aircraft.

Ex 44-76563,NZ3537 and ZK-AOZ, AiResearch Inc. 'Maximiser' kit fitted.
Taken at Whenuapai (New Zealand) on delivery May 1963.
Eventually returned to NZ and sold to Seulawah Air Service as PK-RDB.
Left Auckland on delivery flight 27Sep65, got as far as Darwin on 2Oct65. Remained there, as payment not received.
DBR Darwin 24Dec74 in Cyclone Tracy, remains to Military Museum, East Point, Darwin.

The DC-3 / C-47 with gear doors that I was familiar with was known as the McDermott mod, fully enclosed mains, retracting tail wheel, modified engine cowls with smaller frontal inlet, sometimes fixed cowl flaps, collector exhaust system with short stacks and deflector. IIRC TAS was around 170k. Engineering nightmare from the simplicity of the original design. Alan.

I agree with the thought that the other aircraft looks like a Beagle. They had great visibility from the cockpit for a twin.

Mostly its a feckin' eyesore.
Oh, in the shed someone is supposedly restoring a Nomad.
