Hello,

I've recently bought an oil painting called "Salute to Friends" by D Waring. I don't know where it is meant to be- any ideas??

Thanks in advance for any solutions,
SB

Not sure where it is, but I can say it is not:

Boscombe Down
Coningsby
Northolt
Odiham
Wittering

Kemble? Tower looks similar to the one there, and there is, of course, a Reds link to the airfield which might fit the title.

Nice picture, I bought an original of a Chinook having relief supplies offloaded in the Snow from the Artist that painted it, it was on Ebay, and was the one used for the Benevolent Fund Christmas card one year.... :)

Agree with Archimedes, some similarities to Kemble with perhaps a bit of artistic licence! This site may help

RAF Kemble airfield (http://www.controltowers.co.uk/H-K/Kemble.htm)

Kemble. Buildings on left now bar and flying schools, trees in background part of the Fosse way. Probably!

Try googling Northumbrian Universities Air Squadron and contacting them. There's a D Waring who flies on the co-located Air Experience Flight.

I'd put my money on Scampton. Many a happy hour have I spent up on the balcony there.

Mmmm. Having found the Scampton site I couldn't locate last night -

Scampton Airfield, Domestic & Technical Site. (http://www.airfields.fotopic.net/p54033138.html)

And

Scampton Fire Tender Building & NFE Store (Building 106) (http://www.airfields.fotopic.net/p54033100.html)

Seem to point towards Scampton, I'd say...

Sorry, nothing like the Scampton Tower that I spent 2 years in (bottom floor) in 73-74; no Ground Radio, far too many trees and I can't recall that fire escape being there either.

Edited later to change my mind - after looking through the links above and a dose of artistic licence, aggressive planting of some trees and a dislike of Ground Radio it is Scampton.

Is it Swinderby? I think we had Hawks on the Reds before it closed down.

Swinderby tower well away from any other structure, some 400 yards or more.

And ISTR Swinderby is also lower - the VCR is on the first floor (as far as I could tell from the A15).

Scampton is my bet.

Hi,

Pretty sure its not Kemble. That structure to the left of the tower looks all wrong..

Worth a look on Google earth though ?

With the due dread of the effect that this post will have on me........

The Tower is a 2548c/55 design this was a post-war design and was only built in 17 locations. The list I have found so far is:

Manby
Lyneham
Bassingbourn
Colerne
Kemble
Abingdon
Cranwell
Scampton
Shawbury

Looking at the new build lean-to on the back I would plump for Scampton with some artistic licence. I shall now crawl back under my Control Tower rock and prepare for the abuse I shall receive tomorrow.

PS If anyone has any inkling to learn more about the joys of Control Towers may I suggest UK Control Tower & Airfield Photographs of WW2 (http://www.controltowers.co.uk)

You got that last bit right :8:8:8

Still think its not Kemble.

However, with my Sherlock Holmes hat and smooking jacket on, how many Stns have an Arrows and UAS / AEF / Bulldog connection ? The 2 ac together may be the clue...

Or am I just talking ****e :ooh:

No abuse yet c130jbloke, DII is useful for something!

Having completed my research here is the full possible list of candidates:

Abingdon
Bassingbourn
Honington?
Benson
Colerne
Cottesmore?
Cranwell
Dishforth
Finningley
Kemble
Leuchars
Little Rissington?
Lyneham
Manby
St Athan
Scampton
Shawbury
Thorney Island

Yes I know there are now 18 but some are only possibles.

There are a couple in there that have links to Bulldogs and The Reds. Unfortunately I can't find any photos of the old Tower at Little Ris as apart from Scampton that would be another front-runner.

This, according to the control towers website, is Little Ris (http://www.controltowers.co.uk/L/Little_Rissington.htm)

Archimedes,

That link is to the old tower at Little Ris (Flying Training School Watch Office type 5740/36 :8:8:8)

Apparently there was a 2548c/55 vertical split control tower that has now been demolished :8:8:8

I am led to believe that it was located between the extant tower and the runways, just beyond the dispersals.

Ducking under the desk now preparing for the Flak.

It is RAF Scampton
A picture paints a thousand words, a view from the same direction.... chimney windows and door on left building all match up as do the roof vents, all bar the fire engine bit which is either a later addition or removed by artistic licence to clean up the clutter from the painting, as does the tower minus the extension. Ignore the lack of a tree line, you need something in a painting to connect the ground to the sky to give it a pleasing image...

A refresher of the original painting

Then See link below for the same view in real life :)

Airfield, Domestic & Technical Site. Fire Tender Building & NFE Store (Building 106) (Drg 14012/55a) on the left and the Control Tower, Vertical Split Control Type (Building 105) (Drg No 2548a/55) on the right - 14th September 2008 :: FireSection&CT. Thankyou all very much for your answers. Red 10 (or someone who put their red football socks in the washing machine with their flying suit) is on the balcony.
