Can anybody provide me with the approximate costs of the unmodified G222 and a comparison with the Spartan C27? Thanks for your thoughts.

I believe that the G222 did a great job, I think they were used in Panama.

However the C27 and G222 are light years apart, and as the G222 was only built in small numbers and the C27 is going to have a good run, then comparing prices would need to have a lot of extra factors built in.

The RAAF is facing a problem with its Caribou replacement, because just like the C47 there does not appear to be one. However it would not surprise many that we too will go the C27 track. Has a reasonable level of interchange with the C130J, I hasten to add with the high cost items.

Why do you ask, thinking of buying some for the RAF. Now there is a good chap.

Regards

Cunim, are you perchance in the MOD procurement office? LOL

After all they might do a better job if they asked in here......;)

Any truth to the rumours that Viking may start producing the DHC-5 Buffalo again?

Good low cost alternative and very versatile.

With a handle of Cunim maybe someone is thinking of flogging off the FAAM 146 and replacing it with a Snooplet?! (Ask Exeter for the pole back!):}

Here is some information to get an idea of what a reconditioned G.222 might cost:

In 2005 Alenia signed a $74,5mil contract with Nigeria to recondition 5 Nigerian and 1 ex Italian Air Force G.222s.

However, I don't think there are many ex ItAF G.222 left after this:
Rome, 30 September 2008
Another success in the USA: 287 million dollars contract by U.S. Air Force for eighteen G.222 tactical transport aircraft

http://www.finmeccanica.it/EN/Common/files/Holding/Corporate/Sala_stampa/Comunicati_stampa/Anno_2008/ComFin_G_222_30_09_08_ING.pdf

Here are some figures about recent C-27J contracts (which of course depend on the specific conditions of each contract):
2008 - 4 to Morocco @ €130mil
2007 - 7 to Romania @ €219mil
2006 - 3 to Lithuania @ €75mil
2003 - 12 to Greece @ €297mil

Very true, they hold the type certificate for the DHC-5 and are looking to modernise the aircraft with a glass cockpit, Pratt and Whitney Canada PW150 engines and NVG capability.

Think they are aiming it towards a Canadian Forces replacement for their old DHC-5.

How does the performance of the DHC-5 (payload/TODR/LDR) compare with the DHC-4?

Thanks everybody. Unfortunately I am not in procurement but the C130 and C27 mix would seem to be a reasonably common way forward. Re the difference between the G222 and C27, I agree that they are really chalk and cheese, the performance of the Spartan is really impressive.

Apparently the similarity/commonality between the C-130J and C-27J is not what it has been made out to be, at least that is according to Lockheed-Martin. The following link refers.
