How does one access the archives? I would like to have a look at a thread that has been canned (almost certainly by the originator) within the last 24 hours.

You can't.
Only admins and mods (within their own forums) have access to deleted posts.
If you have used the search function and cannot find the post made by that poster, then the system is working correctly.
