Flying from LHR to Tokyo with ANA in March and I've never flown with them before, any thoughts on the airline?

cheers, :ok:

Haven't flown too far with them, but they were OK. Nothing to write home about, but then again, nothing to complain about.

Should be fine.......

ANA and JAL = Mazda and Lexus

VS and BA = Lotus and Jaguar

I'm sure others will completely disagree:ok:

Of course, JAL and ANA are somewhat similar for passenger service.
Yet I would give ANA a certain preference. Personal opinion.
This is based on occasionally deadheading on their flights, 20 years ago.
They compete with each other, result is, excellent passenger care.
I hated their domestic flights, loved their international flights.

ANA service is consistent and excellent, the entertainment system OK (video on demand, films in either Japanese or English, although the new BA system is better) and food is good... I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Why not offer reasoned opinions, rather than meaningless little sound-bites that you clearly think are brilliant?

Oh dear, I really am very sorry for offending you, that was not my intention at all.

I have flown ANA,JAL,BA and VS to Tokyo on many occassions over the last 10 years. It is rather difficult to explain what service feels like to people who have not flown much on a particular airline or indeed flown much at all.

Therefore, I was trying to use a metaphor (or simile?) which people might understand if they were perhaps more familiar with the branding of cars.

However, maybe the following meets your requirements more fully:

ANA-Nice, pleasant service on board but a little bland at the airport
JAL- Japan's "Flag carrier" with good service on board and good support network. Seen as Number 1 in Japan.
VS- Sporty, young, celebrity image with no fuss service.
BA- Global support and flying heritage as good as any other major carrier. Service levels good to Excellent in First.

The same might also be said of your post Michael SWS - the difference being largely that strake has a history on this forum of useful contribution. Now that we have established that we're all living in glass houses, the stone throwing could perhaps stop?

Thanks!!:ok: I did fly with BA to Beijing in economy and they were brilliant...:D

ANA are great in my opinion, long haul and on their domestic routes too.
Although I only flew domestically with JAL, ANA beat them hands down. If you booked with them online you can choose your seats in advance and there's no charge for the extra leg room seats.

Great service, good entertainment and relatively comfortable in economy. Definitely my first choice on this route.

I'm sure others will completely disagreeLove the analogy, and completely disagree!!!

The only thing I want when leaving Japan after a week of business dining is horrible nasty English food. Low quality muck, stodge, starch, overboiled vegetables and chewy meat. Deep fried cack and nasty cheese sauce from a packet. Normally BA serves nothing else, but on the Tokyo route they inexplicably serve .... Japanese !!!!

Always Always Always fly ANA because if you are going to have to eat Japanese food again you might as well have it done properly :)

Boy, are you out of touch with the word on the average Japanese street.

I thought strake's analogy was pretty spot on although I have only flown ANA and BA in business. ANA was good but I didn't think it was any better or worse than BA.

Bushfiva, I was in Osaka in November and I walked down quite a few Japanese streets. However, I was struck at the time by lack of discussion about the relative merits of Japanese airlines...:p

This is an annoying BA habit, the same happens on BA to/from India. You expect (and get) Indian food on Air India, so after a week or more of the stuff it's something to look forward to, some BA meals on the way home, whose catering I normally find better than the average nowadays. Hey ho, up half the night, depart Chennai on one of those wonderful 3 a.m. departures that India to UK flights seem to specialise in, and what do BA come up with ? A choice. Curry (meat), or curry (vegetarian). Now where's that icon ? Ah yes. :yuk:

Well in that case, I'm looking forward to Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pud when I next fly Air India!

Not sure serving cow would go down too well on Air India ;)

I lived and worked in Japan for 7 years. Most of my colleagues preferred ANA. The fact that they joined Star Alliance while JAL was still trying to go it alone helped also. On Domestic services ANA were always a step ahead of JAL. Needless to say that ANA was my favourite too.

I agree. Superior to any US carrier's service to Japan. Much better for families.
