I'm planning on taking some overseas friends for a casual camping holiday of the area next dry by 4WD (not extreme offroad) and would like any recommendations or suggestions on some of the places you local guys go to ...
Respect of traditions and the environment assured.
thanks

Central Australia (Alice Springs) region is a great place to visit if your in the NT. So many places to visit and the driving is quite easy depending on where and what you would like to see. Uluru and KataJuta are a must. Gosse bluff and the merrinee loop round from Kings Canyon to the West Macdonnell ranges is a good drive and easy. If your friends are from overseas this will give them a good appreciation of one part of the Australian Outback. Heaps of good camping spots that are well looked after by NT Parks and Wildlife.
Give us a shout if you want more specific info on this area.

Also happy to respond to any PM.
As you head up 'the track' the 'devils marbles' are just south of Tennant creek, to save camping in Tennant creek, the reason for which will become evident as you pass thru, Mataranka hot springs for a freshen up, before Katherine gorge. local camping there and a couple of heli operators there to experience one of OZ's natural wonders.

turn right at Pine creek see Jim Jim falls, do a boat cruise on Yellow waters at sunset and a flight from Jabiru over some of the wetlands where 'crocodile dundee' was filmed. Obiru rock paintings are failry good as is the jumping croc cruises.

In darwin the mindle beach markets thursday night to sample cuisine from any country representing the close to 300 million people that live closer to darwin to the North and North West than the tweny odd that live as far as Sydney to the south!!
Even injoying a latte experience in Darwin maul to view the laid back extremely cosmopolitan city that darwin is, is whothwhile. Note, I won't be saying anything about that apology of a recent film 'australia' even tho nick's girlfriend is in it.:{

Across to Kununurra is an easy drive and a big waterhole there called Lake Argyle, and down the western highway to the Bungles. You can go off road there, verging on the moderate four wheel stuff, and heli or F/W around the area which is well worth while.
Broome is ok but further south is red sand, red sand, and did I mention red sand, about three days later Perth will lob up on the horizon.

If you fancy yourself as shark bait there is plenty of opportunity in that section to try it out.

Between Broome and Kununurra there are a couple of very speccy coastal boat, and heli on boats (recently featured on the cockpit views thread) that are good.

In the NT you can also be guided thru tradional lands to hunt and corroboree if you like.
bon voyage, tet
