C130 air to air photos 17 Dec 1996

It's amazing the info you can find out when you put your photo collection and flying logbook together... these are from 17 Dec 1996. Wifie got me a negative scanner for Christmas. The instruction manual was thrown out with the wrapping paper, but I've worked it out now. Only several more thousand negatives to scan. VC-10s anyone?? I've got a "couple"... Enjoy these in the meantime...

I reckon that this particular aircraft (XV 299) was being flown by captain NY and Co-pilot TV.

Just out of interest what are the red strips hanging below the last 9 of 299, they look like some sort of remove before flight pennant, and do not appear to be paint as the angle they dangle moves?

Ayla. They are there to indicate the maximum angle to which the nose gear should be deflected when towing the aircraft. If the towbar comes around to the witness lines, don't go any more.

I believe it is a painted stripe to indicate the max nosewheel turning deflection when the aircraft is being towed. They've all got it, and on both sides.

The pitot head is just forward of the bottom cockpit window.

I did think of that, but their angle seems to change from one photo to the next, in one they look perpendicular to the white writing but not in the other, I also remember the nosewheel lines being white!
I suppose it could just be the angle the photo was taken from!

Though not particularly special (in a 'technical' way - I was using a 1st generation digital camera), this has long been my favourite air-to-air C130 shot, taken from the venerable Vickers Funbus. It shows XV218 (?) against the backdrop of Mount Paget (9,629 ft) on the island of South Georgia. Those occasional trips to South Georgia, from the Falklands, almost used to make the month on QRA worthwhile! :rolleyes:

Ahhhhh,

1. Memories :ok::ok::ok::ok::ok::ok:

2. I see some of them are sporting the old 'This aircraft adopted by the 28th Bradenstoke Badgers' or similar. I always used to wonder what the troops used to think about getting onto an aircraft with comedy expressions on the front. Whilst I think that the Lyneham community connection is outstanding, the mid-90s phase of turning military aircraft into kindergarten toys was a complete joke. Fortunately a rather tall staish turned up and stopped it. ;)
