Surely, they can’t all have “come out”?

RAF list starts on page 122. Good to see a few decent blokes on the list. Now do us all a favour; don't get Flight Commander-itus and do remember where you came from. Some of us can still remember when you used to wet the bed...

'Is it just me but why so many Gp Capt promotions ? '

It's because we have too many Wing Commanders.:p

I see there's a cheaky one in there for Fg Off - Flt Lt Wales..... I thought Fg Off to Flt Lt was 2 1/2 years for a grad. :E

That'll be the same Wales (585841) who has just been made up to Lieutenant RN. Presumably he's still an Army officer - does he draw 3 salaries? I only ask. :ugh:

Rant On
Is it any wonder that we are broke as an organisation and are struggling on the front line with a deficit of equipment. I know people need to be promoted to aid retention, but, do we really need to promote in such vast numbers, at great expense to our budget. I started to count the Sqn Ldr to Wg Cdr promotions, gave up at over 70, and never realised we had so many wings in the Air force, maybe when they say wing they mean that they all get to be in charge of one each on each of the aircraft we have in service? Mind you with the number of wing commanders and the number of Aircraft i think they may have to share. We are struggling to get Aircraft away on time due to lack of manpower or equipment, those involved are working long and extra hours to trying help what is a sinking ship. However i think all these chaps and chapes's will be pleased to know that we have enough senior officers for them to have one each and who will, from their cozy office and important jobs will spur them on, :ugh:
Before i get slated for this rant, i do know we need promotion in every branch, but please do we really need so so many, when we cant even get an aircraft off the ground due to lack of money???
Rant off :O

top_cover - I can't work out which Branch/Trade you belong to. It seems to me that you have little or no comprehension of what happens in an Air Force / Joint environment away from the MOB. I don't always agree with the ranks or structures, but I do at least understand why many of those posts exist and what they do.

Mr H,
I am fully aware of what happens in an 'Air Force / Joint environment away from the MOB', and do fully understand the importance of such posts, however i also understand that the need on the ground, ie: those who get the military hardware off the ground, should be of at least equal importance. I know of many many officers, Sqn Ldr and above, who are in posts that dont need to be there. We are a shrinking military force, and wheras i dont begrudge people getting promoted, i do feel we need to realise the situation we are in and promote according to need, and not for any other reason. We have a shortage of ground trade personell and it is causing delays and affecting our operational capability. I am not in here to criticise anybody or start a slanging match, but those are my views.

I'm curious, what posts do you think we could disestablish?

I remember someone telling me that we needed the carrot of a suitable number of senior and air officer posts to encourage our best and brightest to stay in. If it was purely dead man's shoes, would anyone stay in with any real career aspirations to climb the ladder?

I concur with Tight Seat - well done Piggy and to the new Gp Capt Brailsford. Good to some some ommissions though:E

Is it just me or are there are some very rapid advancements from sqn ldr to gp capt.

I know of many many officers, Sqn Ldr and above, who are in posts that dont need to be there.
I think this is a valid point. A colleague of mine once compared the RAF organisation to a housemartin building its house: both keep adding additional layers of sh!t to feather their own nest, regarding flying operations as secondary; and both lack a single leader with a clear plan.

Does anyone actually know how many officers we have in each rank to see how the pyramid is formed?:D

Charlie, sorry, I set the goal posts a bit wide for that one I'll agree.

I was referring to the now S/L Scarratt, who I had the pleasure of ITC-ing with back in the day.

Well done :E
