Fatal Marine Jet Crash — North Carolina Public Radio WUNC (http://wunc.org/programs/news/archive/SLL122908MARINE_CRASH.mp3/view)

A fighter jet crash near Havelock has claimed the life of a Marine pilot. The AV-8B harrier jet crashed Monday afternoon about a mile from the runway as it was returning to the air station at Cherry Point. The plane went down in an unpopulated area, and no injuries were reported on the ground. Officials haven't yet released the name of the pilot who was killed in the accident pending notification of the family. A Marine Corps spokesman says the cause of the crash is unknown, but an investigation is underway.
This is the second Harrier crash at Cherry point this year -- the first was in February -- and it's the second Marine jet crash this month. Three weeks ago, an F-18 crashed in San Diego. That accident killed four people on the ground.
