Vietnam Airlines flight crew suspended after smuggled goods discovered
May 20, 2002
Vietnam Airlines has reportedly suspended a nine-member flight crew after jewellery and mobile phones were discovered on a flight from Dubai.
Customs officers at Hanoi's Noi Bai airport discovered the smuggled goods on Thursday (16 May), in plastic rubbish bags used for leftover food. According to the Lao Dong newspaper, nearly seven kilograms of gold rings and necklaces were retrieved from the flight, along with 400 mobile phones.
The haul was reportedly worth VND2.1bn. The nine crew members have been suspended pending an investigation, reported Reuters.

Vietnam Airlines Beset by Scandals
22-07-2006
Last week's revelation that Vietnam Airlines employees appeared to have been smuggling goods, including dog meat, into Russia is the latest in a series of scandals that have plagued the airline over the past few months.
When 55 bags from a Vietnam Airlines flight went unclaimed at the Moscow airport earlier this month, Russian officials sent it back to Hanoi. Inspecting the 1,700 kilograms, Hanoi airport officials found all sorts of illegal goods, including dog meat, considered a delicacy by Vietnamese. Officials suspect the goods were intended for resale to Vietnamese living in Russia.
Pham Chi Cuong, director of ground services at Hanoi's Noi Bai airport, says an investigation is under way into a possible conspiracy among employees and passengers.
Cuong says three airport employees have been suspended so far.

The apparent smuggling ring is the latest blow to the prestige of Vietnam Airlines. The state-owned enterprise has been hit by one scandal after another in recent months.

In June, a pilot carrying a briefcase full of cash was arrested in Australia on drug charges. Another pilot was arrested in Singapore for harassing a hotel employee.

Early this year, an Italian court fined the airline $5 million*for failing to pay $1.6 million in a 1994 judgment to a former lawyer for one of the airline's travel agents.

And in April, a flight from Hanoi to Frankfurt was intercepted by fighter jets from the Czech Air Force after it repeatedly failed to respond to Czech air traffic control. Apparently there had been problems with the radio.

no radio problem here !!.................they were deep into theyre dreams
when one of the cabin crew came in into the cockpit after seeing on a window the fighter jet, to not much of here surprise, the cockpit door was open and the 2 guys counting sheeps................radio problem he he

The airline has been hit by reports of dubious contracts and purchasing decisions, and allegations that airline employees pay up to $20,000 in bribes for jobs.

The news media uncovered some of these revelations and, Vietnam Airlines spokesman Nguyen Tan Chan says, others were found during a comprehensive government investigation.
Chan says the investigation will not be complete for some time.
But he says the scandals have yet to affect the company's bottom line. Revenue for the first half of 2006 was on target for the year. And the company says it was recently certified as safe by the International Air Transport Association.

Travelers in Vietnam have little choice but to fly Vietnam Airlines. The company and its Pacific Airlines subsidiary have a monopoly on domestic flights.
Despite the scandals however, the company retains the confidence of its government owners. On Wednesday, the government approved the airline's bid to purchase 10 new planes. Vietnam Airlines now plans to begin direct flights to the United States by the end of 2007.........or maybe not

Vietnam Airlines Fires Cigarette Smuggling Airhostess , General Director Nguyen Xuan Hien said that he has signed a decision firing the airhostess who smuggled cigarettes in Australia.
Vietnam Airlines airhostess fined $10,000 in Australia , has also disciplined six other staff who were involved in purchasing duty-free cigarettes in Melbourne to sell in Australia.

According to Hien, the Chief of Vietnam Airlines Office in Australia, he immediately reported this case to his leaders in Vietnam. At an urgent meeting held last Friday, Vietnam Airlines officials decided to fire airhostess Luu Thi Lien and arranged for the six other staff that transported cigarettes for Lien to transfer to other jobs at lower salaries within six months.

Head of Vietnam Airlines airhostess mission Nguyen Thi Minh Ha said that the agency would issue some more regulations to tighten control over airhostesses to avoid regrettable cases.

One week ago, airhostess Luu Thi Lien was fined $10,000 by the Australian Customs Agency for purchasing duty free cigarettes in Melbourne to sell in Australia.

Vietnam Airlines suspends two crew for smuggling cash

Vietnam Airlines has suspended two flight attendants for illegally bringing US$300,000 in cash into South Korea, a company excecutive said Thursday. Nguyen Quy Hien and Nguyen Hoang Huong Xuan were caught carrying the money while going through customs at Seoul's Incheon Airport after a flight from Hanoi on March 19.

"Vietnam Airlines decided to suspend them this week because they violated South Korea's customs regulations," said the national carrier's spokesperson Trinh Ngoc Thanh.

According to South Korean customs regulations passengers entering the country must declare all currency valued at over US$10,000.

Vietnam Airlines, the country's state-owned flag carrier, has also suspended one of its pilots, whom an Australian court Tuesday charged with smuggling millions of dollars in drug profits out of Australia.

The court claimed that pilot Lai Quoc Viet, 58, illegally transported US$3.4 million from Australia to Vietnam between June 2005 and June 2006. :DViet was arrested at an airport in Sydney on Monday after a flight from HCM City.

Last August an Australian court sentenced another Vietnam Airlines pilot to four and a half years in prison for laundering more than 6 million dollars. Tran Dinh Dang was arrested in June 2006 with 540,000 dollars in cash in his cabin luggage.

Airline pilot jailed for smuggling $6.5 million
A 38-year-old former Vietnam Airlines pilot was today jailed for 4 ½ years for his involvement in a large scale international cash smuggling racket.
The sentence was handed down in Sydney’s District Court to Van Dang Tran from Vietnam after he pleaded guilty last year to money laundering under the Commonwealth Criminal Code. Tran must serve at least 2 ½ years of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Acting on information from the Australian Crime Commission (ACC), Australian Customs Service officers detained Tran on 4 June 2006 when he attempted to leave Sydney International Airport with over $540,000 concealed in his cabin luggage. He was initially charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) with an offence under section 15 of the Financial Transaction Reports Act 1988.
Investigations by the ACC-led Task Force Gordian, which was established in March 2005 to combat money laundering and tax fraud, revealed that Tran engaged in numerous money laundering activities between July 2005 and June 2006 where a total of $6.5 million was smuggled from Australia. It is alleged he laundered the money on behalf of Long Thanh Money Transfer Company in Footscray, Melbourne and their associated businesses in Victoria and New South Wales.
As a result of the ACC Task Force investigations Tran had his charge upgraded to recklessly laundering $1 million or more under the Commonwealth Criminal Code.

YES.....................ONE MILLION

In October 2006, Task Force investigators also charged the proprietors of Long Thanh Money Transfer Company and their associated businesses with laundering in excess of $93 million. :eek:These matters are still before the court.

Japan arrests Vietnam Airlines co-pilot for smuggling
December 17th 2008

*A Vietnam Airlines co-pilot was arrested Wednesday in Tokyo on suspicion of fencing stolen Japanese goods in Vietnam, an airline official said.

Dang Xuan Hop, 33, was arrested by Japanese police after his flight from Hanoi landed at Tokyo's Narita International Airport. Police accuse him of being part of a ring that smuggled items stolen by a Vietnamese gang in Japan to customers in Vietnam.

"We deeply regret this case because it has badly affected Vietnam Airlines' image and confidence," said airline spokesman Trinh Ngoc Thanh. "We have decided to suspend him from flying."

Thanh said Vietnam Airlines instructs its aircrews on forbidden activities before every flight, but admitted that the number of employees involved in similar scandals was increasing.

"We will need to review our rules to limit wrongdoing," said Thanh.

also In May, Vietnam Airlines flight attendant Tran Thanh Phong was arrested by Japanese airport police when he violated customs restrictions by entering the country with brand-name goods valued at more than 10,000 dollars.

this is the latest over the land of the risin' sun from The Japan Times

Dang Xuan Hop, has denied knowing that the goods were stolen but admitted he "received $100 in return for" transporting the items each time, the police said.

They suspect he transported the items once or twice a month since at least last year.

News photo

Shoplifting by the theft ring started around 2006 at drugstores and elsewhere nationwide. To date, 85 people have been arrested, while the value of cosmetics, clothing and other items stolen is believed to amount to about ¥140 million.

The police believe some of the stolen items were sent to Dang Xuan's accommodations in Japan and he carried them on board aircraft in his hand luggage.

The hand luggage of pilots and copilots does not have to undergo customs searches.

The police searched six related locations Wednesday, including the airline's offices at Narita, Chubu and Kansai airports, while investigating how the stolen items were distributed.

2005-2008 The new VP would have been in CP throne room when all this happening.....great way to stop the illeagal activity. Yeh...Promote him?!?!

How can the government just stand around and let this happen if they own the airline. They think now they can get expat pilots cheap but what happens when things come good again and they are left with just the locals who can't or wont go overseas because they will all be targeted as soon as they get off aircraft. :O

Vietnam Airlines pilot faces charges for smuggling gold
Police in Ho Chi Minh City have wrapped up investigation into a case involving an airline pilot and two others who attempted to smuggle around 1.5 kilograms of gold to Russia in 2006.
Investigations found Pham Minh Tuan, a pilot of Vietnam Airlines Corporation’s crew No. 919 who was arrested on November 10, was actual owner of the contraband gold, not his friend Dang To Hai from the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
Investigators said Tuan had asked Hai to accept the responsibility and arranged the confessions for the people involved.
Police also handed documents to the HCMC Prosecution Office to press charges against Tuan, and two other employees of Vietnam Airlines Corporation, Le Trung Hieu and Nguyen Xuan Hao, for “smuggling goods and currencies.”
Hao had been caught red-handed at HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat Airport in October 2006 carrying some 1.5 kilograms of gold jewelry hidden in a pilot’s headphones while he was about to board flight VN527 to Russia.
Hao was an employee of Vietnam Airlines’ A75 Airplane Enterprise which specializes in repairing and maintaining the carrier’s aircrafts.
Investigators said Hao had used his staff card to cross the tarmac as if he was working, though he was not on shift at the time.
Tuan had allegedly hired Hao and Hieu to smuggle the gold to Russia.
Hai, who’d had smuggling charges pressed against him in May, had spilt the beans on Tuan, saying he was the actual owner of the smuggled gold. Charges against Hai were dropped on December 5.
