Men at work get jet scare

KOLKATA, Dec. 1: A major disaster was averted at NSC Bose Airport this afternoon when a Spicejet aircraft with 139 passengers on board landed on the same runway on which several people were engaged in repair work.
The incident took place at around 2.45 p.m. A dozen people, including engineers of Airports Authority of India (AAI) were carrying out routine repair and maintenance work on the main runway near the meeting point of Charlie Taxi way.
A notice to airmen had earlier been issued that the main runway would be closed to traffic from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for maintenance work on the runway. During this period the secondary runway was to be used for flights.
One of the workers noticed a flight had landed on the 19L end (the Jessore Road end) of the main runway where they were working.
He raised an alarm, after which he and his colleagues rushed to remove the machinery they were working with and they managed to drive off within seconds of what would have been a disaster.
Air Traffic Control (ATC) officers meanwhile, noticed the flight landing on the wrong runway and asked the pilot to make an emergency stop of the aircraft at the meeting point of the runway and the Bravo Taxi way, which is barely a few hundred feet from the Charlie Taxi way point where the men were at work.
According to officials, the ATC officers were vectoring the flight which had come from Bagdogra to land on the 19R end (the Jessore road end of the secondary runway).
The pilot, however, landed on the Jessore road end of the main runway instead of the secondary runway. The ATC officer in the tower realised what was happening and immediately asked him to make an emergency stop and the mishap was averted.
It is learnt that Air Safety officials of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have questioned the American pilot of the flight and the Indian co-pilot. Both of them have been taken off the roster till the enquiry is completed.
In a statement a Spicejet official said that the airline was taking a serious look into the incident.
Steps will be taken by the airline to prevent such incidents again. Both the pilots have been derostered.

This reminds me of the Jet Landing on the taxy track at Goa.

But in both cases airmanship prevailed to mitigate the consequences. Ultimately... and this is important, errors will be made in aviation "like in life" but how do you react to this situation?
