View Full Version : Anybody remember Lifeline/Secret Army BBC series from the 70's
I used to watch it every Sunday night when I was a kid and just bought the DVD box. Wondering now if it aged well.
Secret Army (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Army)
Low Flier 29th Nov 2008, 20:03 It was inadvertently killed off by the very funny pisstake "Allo Allo".
They still show reruns, of the original serious series(es), on the UKTVHistory Channel. There was even a sequel which portrayed a 1970s followup to track down Herr Kessler (the SS/Gestapo villain) to South America.
If you're in UK/Europe you can see it on Freeview or Freesat.
Low Flier 29th Nov 2008, 20:13 Followup question for French speakers:
First time around I was always bothered by the name Le Candide. With an 'e' on the end of Canidide, shouldn't it have been La Candide?
tony draper 29th Nov 2008, 20:36 You wasted your money, it has been repeated three times on UK History this year up to now, also the sequel, when that norty German chap Kessler gets his commupance,it was good, from the days we made good watchable TV drama in Britain, not the dumbed down politically correct social engineering shite they churn out now.
:E
You wasted your money
You assume that I can watch UK history, no such thing around here. Good to hear you still enjoyed it in this day and age.
tony draper 29th Nov 2008, 20:53 They are re making another good drama from that era, Survivors, lord knows what a total arse they will make of that.
They are getting like Hollywood, they don't have a original idea in their collective heads so they trawl the past for ideas.
:)
Parapunter 29th Nov 2008, 21:07 Candide is a name as well as an adjective, so can carry either gender depending on context. La Candide could be the naif or 'er, Candide. As, erm, I understand thingumykerjigs.
Ten West 29th Nov 2008, 22:17 No UKTV History?
It's on Freeview. It's about the only TV channel I bother to watch. Good stuff like Secret Army, Kessler, Coast, etc.
Brilliant channel. :ok:
Without wishing to rub it in, I've seen the entire series about three times now, and remember all the plots.
I can't believe what happened in the end though to the Luftwaffe guy in the Canadian run prison camp. (I won't say what happens in case people are still watching the DVDs). Surely the Camp Commandant wouldn't have permitted that?
Low Flier 29th Nov 2008, 23:23 (I won't say what happens in case people are still watching the DVDs)
Can you at least tell us who won the war?
I'm busting for a pee and can't wait to find out.
Tyres O'Flaherty 29th Nov 2008, 23:31 The Survivors remake has got some surprisingly good reviews that I've read, apparently by people who are aware of the original.
Gotta check it out on the bbc iplayer soonest. I too generally take a dim view of remakes these days
Ten West 29th Nov 2008, 23:43 "Can you at least tell us who won the war?"
The Americans. ;)
I found Kessler" a wee bit far-fetched personally, especially the cliched cronies in the Kameradenwerke. All monocles, sinister appearances, etc. but all in all it was far better than anything on telly these days.
Whilst we're on the subject of excellent TV dramas, I've just bought this:
Amazon.co.uk: Edge Of Darkness - The Complete Series [1985]: bob peck: DVD (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edge-Darkness-Complete-bob-peck/dp/B00004CYR0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1228006060&sr=8-1)
If you haven't seen it, I urge you to buy it now!
Tyres O'Flaherty 29th Nov 2008, 23:51 Don't think so
by losing you get bombed back to the stone age & then rebuilt by the occupiers so you aren't a nuisance again.
At least post WW2
Germany. Japan. Didn't do bad out of it did they ? :)
EEDIT>>
Arses ten west. time your edits so as not to catch me out :}

Too true! There's so many different tribes they are frightened of 'offending'
tony draper 30th Nov 2008, 07:26 "I found Kessler" a wee bit far-fetched personally, especially the cliched cronies in the Kameradenwerke. All monocles, sinister appearances, etc".
err no we really are like that.:E
Spitoon 30th Nov 2008, 08:20 Didn't watch Secret Army much but I did meet Clifford Rose who played Kessler a little while after the series ended. A really nice guy.....I guess that makes him a good actor.
And just to echo Ten West - I agree, Edge of Darkness was a high point of 80s TV in the UK and I think it still stands the test of time. Oh, and I think I fell in love with Joanne Whalley the first time I saw it.
chevvron 30th Nov 2008, 08:48 Is it true the 'bar' set used in 'Allo 'Allo was the same one used in Secret Army?
Rainboe 30th Nov 2008, 09:57 Remember the drama series Doomwatch (1970) with a very young Robert Powell starring? Very dramatic, and the first of the 'ecological dramas'. Descended into farce one program when terrorists have nicked a nuke and have it at the end of a pier. Doomwatch team trying to disable it. In a building overlooking the scene- loud explosion (trigger explosive going off), one of the team pokes his head up to window and announces 'Non Nuclear!'. Audience dissolves into hysterical laughter.....like if it was the big bomb, you'd be talking about it buster?
Rather be Gardening 30th Nov 2008, 16:38 Edge of Darkness - utterly brilliant. Gripping plot and great acting. :ok:
Ten West 1st Dec 2008, 00:08 "Is it true the 'bar' set used in 'Allo 'Allo was the same one used in Secret Army?"
I used to think it was, but having watched all of Secret Army again I don't believe it is. The layout of the Candide was all wrong compared to Cafe Rene. It may be that the set designers recycled some bits of Le Candide, but I have no idea really.
Edge of Darkness:
It had some fantastic characters, didn't it? I loved them all, but my favourites were Darius Jedburgh, the "Eccentric" CIA field operative and shadowy Whitehall figures Harcourt and Pendleton.
In fact, I think I'm going to watch the whole lot again onj my days off. :ok:
Spitoon 1st Dec 2008, 04:45 Sorry to hijack the thread but I haven;t watched EOD for a while and seeing the comments here reminds me just how good it is.
Agree the characters were wonderful, Jedburgh particularly! Loved the lines about don't let him have your Diners Club card (or something like that). Music was excellent too.
I read that 'they're' doing a re-make for the cinema. It's due out next year - moved to the US with Mel Gibson as Craven. I fear it may be a disappointment in comparison to the original....
Effluent Man 1st Dec 2008, 08:56 Anyone remember "Moonstrike" A BBC series from the early 60's along similar lines to Secret Army? I think it featured agents being dropped by Lysanders and was clearly the forerunner of SA.Does anyone else notice how the sets now look like Am Dram ones? Diffilcult to believe production values have altered so much in 30 years.
that librarian 1st Dec 2008, 12:15 Replying to the post earlier in the thread. The designers on Allo Allo asked the designer of Secret Army (Austin Ruddy) for his designs for the Candide, but he told them where to go! However, they did copy the look.
I've just finished writing a book all about Secret Army and Kessler, called 'The Complete Secret Army', which is actually published today (by Classic TV Press). As well as info on the production of the series (with lots of cast and crew anecdotes and photos) and reviews of all the episodes, there's lots of background on the real-life wartime events that inspired the storylines.
Great, I'll have a look at your book. Sounds good.
Haven't seen Secret Army for a long time.
But EOD, 'GET ME PEMBLETON!' Well I think it was Pembleton.
