Hi there,

I have run into a bit of a show stopper in Office 07, the problem started small and seems to have escalated.

I have been using Office 2007 pro plus since purchasing it a few months ago, I use it on an HP laptop, running vista home no problems to start with, all ran very smooth.

Then out of the blue one day I tried to open a excel doc using the icon as usual, but this time it opened excel and came up with an error telling me that microsoft vista cannot locate this file and to make sure that I have typed the path correctly...at first this seemed to only happen with Excel, but then it started happening with word too, my work around was to open Excel or Word up and then use it to open the document from the open button, that worked ok, it was a bit annoying, but atleast I could continue to use the files, then today Word decided to give up completely, now it just freezes if try to open anything in it, Excel is still limping along, but I guess that will give up shortly too.

I have searched the web for possible answers to my problem but I have come up short, I have tried to repair and this had no effect at all, from what I can gather is its more a Vista problem than that of Office itself.

If anyone has any ideas I would very much apreciate your help!

Many thanks!

Anthony

couple of questions:

have you installed an updates?

can you open any of the office files directly from 'myDocs'?

are there any error codes with the error message?

Hi there,

Not that I know of, however windows may have updated itself....

I tried running the repair option, but no luck there.

I can open word no problem, but as soon as I try to do anything on the task bar...game over.

Excel still seems to be working, although I cant open files from the icons on the desktop, I can only open through excel itself.
Also I do use office live, but I have been using it for some time so it does not seem to have any negative effect.

I get the feeling that it must be something to do with cursed Vista's cursed updates!

I really dont want to re-install as I have to find the disc...which may prove difficult!

Cheers,

Ant

Had a similar problem a couple of years ago; you're not using Norton are you?

I'm afraid my solution was to take my PC to a professional as I couldn't get rid of Norton!!

Hi Whirls,

Nope no Norton on that machine, I try to stay as far from Norton as is possible, and yeah I know getting rid of it once its on there is near enough impossible!

The office pc I purchased recently comes with the bloody thing on it, however Office 07 (Trial) is working fine on there for now.

Its funny you spend a fortune on the software and yet if you want technical help...well good luck, unless you are willing to fork out £3 a minute for the pleasure of a phonecall with someone who tells you that its not their software, it must be something else...I hate computers!

Having re-read that I can see how it may come across as rather bitter, but I just don't understand how it could be fine one minute and then broken the next!

Of course as a helicopter pilot you must be used to that sort of thing! :} (just kidding!)

Cheers!

Some thoughts:

1. If it's working OK, turn OFF Microsoft Auto Updates, or as a minimum set them to allow you to decide whether or not you need them. I know all about the need to protect your computer from malware, and I know that MS software is primary target for malware, but I prefer to trust my NAT firewall, ZoneAlarm and AntiVirus rather than MS's updates.

MS Updates often break something. There'll be another update out in a couple of months that will fix the broken bit, but you may be desperate by then.

2. Office 2007 is an acquired taste. I know a couple of people who've managed to climb the mountain of the learning curve and like it, and rather more who've given up in disgust and gone and bought Office 2003. One is a successful lawyer who had a very large and very good "will writer" all written round MS Word features.
Word 2007 did away with some of those features, and there is (as far as she could tell) no equivalent replacement. She's back on Office 2003 and very happy.

I'm the bloke who stressed to her to get her new PC with XP Pro, not Vista - and forgot to tell her to ask also for Office 2003.
Auto Updates are OFF on her machine (and on mine).

In your case, if you have the CDs, I'd be inclined to uninstall the whole suite, restart the machine, and reinstall it. Then turn off auto updates.

I too made the mistake of purchasing Office 2007 with a new Vista equipped laptop. The perfect storm!

Apart from compatibility issues with Office 2003 recipients, I’ve experienced a raft of issues. Outlook data file constantly reporting an incorrect shutdown despite shutting down correctly, ‘standard’ Excel features renamed and almost impossible to find and so forth.

Will persevere for another month before upgrading to XP, Office 2003.

Office 2007 is a heap of sh*t - the quick access toolbar doesn't have half the functionality of 2003, and the ribbons can't be changed
Don't get me started on Vista (or not, as the case may be....), and will MS stop talking about offering new "experiences" with software...
