Hello folks,

question for those of you based in Nigeria or familiar with pilot recruitment there;

My 22 year old cousin is just finishing her CPL/ME/IR in the states, and was asking me about the possibility of being employed back home without a type rating. She would ideally prefer not to do a type rating until she has employment or an offer of employment.

I have no idea, really, in view of the fact that VN, Arik etc seem to only be recruiting type rated people or cadets.

Anybody know what the outlook is for her? or can you give me advise or suggestions to pass on to her? (You can PM me too if preferable)

Thanks (and no need please for all the "do not go to Nigeria" merchants to reply to this one!!!! :})

There's no worry as far as employment is concerned for ur cousin, nigerian aviation is booming the demand of crew is more than what the market can offer and being a nigerian citizen he stands more chances,as for the type-rating i don't know of any operators in Nigeria asking rating,VK,ARIK,AERO etc... type-rate their pilots,he should just rush home asap

Thanks Alpha-b,

so she is fine to come back home with just her CPL/ME/IR?

what about her hours? she will have about 250 hours when she finishes, but looking for example at the VK advert (http://www.virginnigeria.com/en/ng/jobs/Flight_Deck_Application.pdf) it states a requirement of 350 hours. Are they flexible on this, or is she better off staying in the states and doing some instructing to build up her hours?

Thanks again

Make sure to contact the Nigerian CAA/DCA to ask them about conversion of her FAA CPL/IR .They might need to see the full licence (not temporary one) and logbook stamps , extra exams might be required , local medical ....
I don't know nigeria but in a number of other African states the requirements for citizens and expats can be quite different .She'll probably be OK with low time .Having said that , gaining some experience is always profitable as well.

Hi there,
I dont see the need for her to do a type rating, and waste money!!!. Aviation in Nigeria, is booming at the moment. I my opinion, its the best place to get a type rating right now.
The only draw back is the NCAA, which are a bit slow, like any other goverment organization around the world. Converting your licence might take a few months. Make sure u process ur VERIFICATION LETTER as soon as u get to nigeria, as this may take a bit of time. NO TEMPORARY LICENCE in NIgeria.
The chances of her starting on a jet is quite high in Nigeria. Try Arik,VN, AERO. Best Of luck. I hope this stirs the ship in the right direction...:D

Cheers,

Thank you all for your input. Its much appreciated, and I'll pass it on.

I would also particularly welcome input from any of you folks at VK, Arik or Aero, on how best for her to apply.

Thanks again

also on a related note:

does anyone know what the process is for getting an FAA licence converted?

are there study aids available for the various exams?

does the NCAA decide which exams a candidate needs to sit after reviewing their licence and logbook? or is it a standard set of exams?

Ray,

If you post her photo and the phone number, it might speed up the process…

Your cousine stands a much better chance to be hired with low-time with VK,as she's local i've got few friends who were hired straight from school i don't see why she wouldn't,she's got a wide choice between Arik,VK and Aero so i suppose doing her instructor it's not very important at this stage altough it's also something good and extra to have.Regards to all

conversion exams are airlaw performance and loading, when she gets back she can contact any low time pilot in any of the airlines they will put her through the materials for the exams.
737-300/DASH-8 rating is worthwhile ONLY IF affordable, but not necessary to secure a job.

VK only requires a CPL hours TT are not important,
same with Aero

Dana is looking for nigerians big time, and they dont mind giving MD83 rating

ALL WILL BOND YOU
