It is once again time to say farewell to the third-last Boeing B747-400 – Vulindlela. ZS–SAY arrived in Johannesburg on 7 October 1993 on its delivery flight from the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington; USA. The first revenue flight took place on 15 October 1993 from Johannesburg to Cape Town and the last revenue flight was from London to Johannesburg on the 13 October 2007.In its 14 years of service, South African Airways Technical has performed three D-Checks on the aircraft. The aircraft has now been sold by the lessor, ZS-SAY Leasing Limited, to the new operator Transaero of Russia. The final test-flight under the command of Captains Scully Levin and Tyrone Werner took place on 2 October 2008 with minor snags being identified. All technical information during the flight was recorded by Flight Operations QA representative Peter Brink.SAA Technical would also like to congratulate Captain Scully Levin on achieving a remarkable milestone in his flying career by completing 25 000 hours during the test flight on ZS-SAY. Technical staff on board the test-flight were extremely honoured to have shared this moment with Captain Levin.Captain Scully Levin. The hand over to the new owners took place this week at SAA Technical. In the interim ZS-SAZ and ZS-SBK are out on a wet-lease to TAAG and support the daily Luanda-Lisbon schedule, swapping around on a weekly basis for maintenance in the SAT hangars. These aircraft are also flying the Johannesburg-Lagos route for SAA on certain days.ZS-SBS is being considered by SAA for use on certain routes where the passenger load factors and fare structure allow for profits to be made, so hopefully it will be back in the skies soon.
