Sorry about the blurring- the image hosting site compressed them too much...

Hopefully the weather will be better next week!

Very impressive but why the practice now when this year's season is but a distant and damp memory
and next year's is, well, next year??
Is there an event on the horizon?

Tuesday & Wednesday, posted via NOTAMs.

Edited to the above, had posted a smart-arse comment about reading NOTAMs then realised Ex-Scrib is an ex-scrib... Apologies..

All very cloak and dagger then!

Quite fancy a bacon and sausage sandwich

The weather stopped today's Role Demo, but, if the pyros are paid for, they need to be used up...

And there was me thinking it was a modern version of FIDO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fog_Investigation_and_Dispersal_Operation_(FIDO))

Perhaps, given the date, said pyro's could have been shifted overnight about 130 miles to the south prior to ignition?

The weather gods have something against the Role Demo. Apparently there is a 24hr rolex (now Thursday). Forecast not good though.

What is the difference between a Role Demo and a Flying Display? Why not call it a flying display? It really is a flying display isn't it? Or would that be breaking the rules?

CrazyMonkey
5th Nov 2008, 18:54
It is actually a display and all pilots have a PDA. The name Role Demo probably wasn't the best choice and it does cause confusion. Can you think of a better name for the display event for next year? Comedy ones welcome.

The Roll Demo was in the galley of the E-3D. Mine was Ham and Cheese.

Another day, another weather cancellation, although it started to almost look promising... But, at least we still got the big bangs!

They were the highlights of the week - and I was there since Monday morning :uhoh:

Lincolnshire, November, fog. I thought we all knew that one - A7 are ever hopeful.

Silly question, but apart from pi$$ing off the local bird population, what exactly is the point of all these explosions?

For whom was the 'role demonstration' planned in any case? And what was its purpose?

We do them every year. A large group of students who need to know more about the RAF come and see both the dog and the pony. There was also a goat rolling about this year, but you have to expect that.

God I'm getting old. A few years ago I would have thought that a few 'big bangs' were well cool. However, today they woke up both of the kids, and turned a peaceful afternoon into a not so peaceful one. Glad that some of you enjoyed it!!:ok:

Why have it at Waddington ? I would have thought the nearest Tonka base would have been better. Has everything got to evolve around Waddington these days . Maybe somebody could explain a bit better :ok:

Why have it at Waddington ?

It depends on who has the best mess and facilities.

Many moons ago it was decided that Waddo would house the RCDS visit. The briefing room that we had tried for years to get updated from its WW2 Mass Bomber briefing image (it was only 12 years old) was torn inside out, acoustic tiles added, snazzle lighting, gucci history pics etc and the whole paid from the RAF 'let's impress the RCDS' pot. I think it has been redone since.

Coningsby had its Bastard Bill Suite done on the 'let's impress the CinC pot' and named after him. It may have impressed BB but the Gp Capt still lives locally as Gp Capt rtd. Maybe the sound proofing is not as good.

PS

While you can look AT a Typhoon you can go IN TO a Sentry or Sentinel - better in the cold and wet.:)

Mr C Hinecap
7th Nov 2008, 08:32
Can you explain why you think a Tornado base would be better? What would having less facilities, less pan space and a far greater journey for the visitors and most participants bring to the party?

RCDS = Royal College of Defence Spending

Always has been, probably always will be........:hmm:

Old man - perhaps you might want to update yourself on the Defence Academy of the UK and, in particular, the JSCSC.

Having recently attended a bit of schooling there, I can say it is an excellent facility with a good mix of enthusiastic military and academic staff who do a really good job. I don't expect they could teach you anything tho - so probably best you drop them an e-mail so we can get you on as a guest lecturer there. (insert ironic smiley of choice here)

BEagle
7th Nov 2008, 10:17
I'm sure they do an excellent course or two at the DA - but why do stations bow, scrape and blow their budgets for the infamous RCDS visits?

JSCSC is hardly in the same league as RCDS, 'young' man!

The current Commandant was not exactly a stunning success in his previous role, either.

So for a few students they do fly overs low , blow up big fireworks , land get bevvied up , sing songs round the piano in the mess, then bugger off home next day :)

Now this is how the large pot of gold we have to play with should be spent.

Well at least it will give us some good future officers to lead the military through this turbulent time , how long have these displays been going on for....... :E

The Roll Demo was in the galley of the E-3D. Mine was Ham and Cheese.

You can have ham...You can have cheese...But you can't have ham and cheese unless you are royalty...

I was standing just the other side of the Western taxiway when they set them off on the 4th...Even though I knew it was coming, was determined to not answer anybody talking to me and thus be distracted and had my eyes glued on the suitcase sized green box that I reckoned had to be the explosive when it went off I still nearly 'set loose a mole' at the sheer ferocity of the bang...It actually wobbled the metal uprights that were holding up the roof over my head by a couple of inches and most on the sqn thought the windows were coming in...

My hearing was so impaired afterwards I missed several requests to do menial tasks and ended up going home early...

KeepItTidy,

There was a limited one day display with pyros last year at Waddington. The demo is then followed by a Typhoon display. The role demo has been expanded over the last few seasons. The pyros simulating Brimstone is superb. In my opinion the demo is highly impressive and congrats to all involved. It certainly gets the attention of the public at airshows. Well done guys/girls and good luck for the 09 airshows.
