Any airplane with -
(1) 3 engines at least, 4 engines preferred, for oceanic crossings;
(2) flight crew consisting of 2 pilots and a flight engineer;
(3) preference for steam powered gages;
(4) control wheel, no joystick;
(5) Hydraulic + cable combination for controls, no fly-by-wire.

If a Piper Cub, stick is acceptable.

1. Lockheed L1011...flying one now, and for the last 28 years in Command, a very nice airplane.

2. Lockheed JetStar, a fine performer, especially with Garret engines (flew this one, too, for awhile).

3. Lockheed L-188 Electra...instant power when you needed it, although very complicated systems (also flew this one, as well).

4. Lockheed 1649 Constellation. Fast, but engines gave problems from time to time...(also flew this one as well, anyone see a pattern here?:})

5. Douglas DC-6B.
The most reliable 4-engine piston transport ever produced...and yes, I flew this one for over one thousand hours. Very low cost of operation as well, thanks to its very reliable engines.

Runners up.
B707-320B (advanced cowl)...the classic jet transport, yep, flew this for a long while.
King Air, any varient.
Twin Otter, great fun, but slow in the cruise.
And, last but not least, my Cessna 411A, fast, quiet, comfortable.

Types that I have no desire to fly...
Any airplane that routinely is flown up side down...don't like these, get sick.:eek:

Who the Hell is desperate enough to fly the TriStar? I mean aside from our own Royal Air Force that is?

Anyhoo....

1) The L1011 TriStar, no really, I would love to
2) MD11 too late for the DC10 I expect
3) The VC10.....anyone in 10SQ comment?
4) HS748, done the ATP, a poor comparison
5) F27 / FH227, failing that the Fokker 50

The real # 1 was of course was the BAC / Aerospatiale long pointy noise machine....

I have to tell this story -

When I was a teen I had a weird dream; I had built a 1/10 scale B-36 with six chainsaw engines. I had a motorcycle seat on the fwd fuselage and was just taking off -

then I woke up. :ugh: :rolleyes:

I would have liked to fly a P51 Mustang. Nearly arranged it once but the Regulatory Authority said we had to have prior P51 or similar experience, so lost the chance.

Whatever I'm being paid to fly at any given time. I don't care what kind of powerplants, how many, the number of wings, if the gear goes up or down, or how fast. I'm just as happy in a Cessna 172 as a Super Cub as a 747.

I really liked the Air Tractor 802, and I liked the C-130.

The 20 series Lears were a lot of fun.

I think the most fun I ever had in an airplane was a Lake Amphibian. Something about quietly floating with the cockpit hatch door open after landing in the finger of a lake, and having a water snake swim up to the cockpit that ranked up there with one of the neatest experiences I've ever had in a light airplane.

Then again, ask me on any given day, and whatever I'm flying, there's your answer on that day. Any day flying is better than a day sitting thinking about flying.

BCAL NEVER flew TriStars, shame on you. DC10-10s and DC10-30s only

Er, I think you'll find they did. I was lucky enough to
have a jumpseat ride on one to Lanzagrotty in the
late 90s. Lovely jet :O

No you are wrong. British Caledonian NEVER flew the TriStar, and especially not in 1990 considering they were absorbed into BA in 1987 !

What you flew on was an ex BA TriStar that was flying for Caledonian, the rebranded British Airtours. Different companies mon ami.

Heck, do you mean fly in as pax or as PIC? Whatever, as pax:

Having been lucky enough to experience many prop types such as the Airspeed Ambassador, DC-3/4/6/7, Lockheed Constellation, Curtiss C-46,
L-188 Electra, Viscount, Vanguard, Convair 440, Martin 404, YS-11 and the IL-18; it would have to be the ones I missed out on:

1. Bristol B-170 (missed out when one I was due to fly on went tech)
2. B377 Stratocruiser (missed a chance to fly on a C-97)
3. Vickers Viking
4. IL-14
5. Bristol Britannia (missed out on a ride in a British Eagle example)

Btw 411A, I loved the Tristar but it had one major flaw: no propellers! ;)

I am not a licenced pilot. If I was, I'd love to get my hands on:

1. The connie (of course)
2. DC-6
3. Spitfire
4. Lancaster
5. Mosquito

One of life'e very minor regrets is that I was born too late and I missed out on the props . Still I've only got almost :{ 1000 hrs in one of the above..and lots more on another. Still I'd give almost all my 747-400 hours for just 1 hour in a P-51... really..but I'm not swopping any of the F-4 hours for anything - that flying was priceless :ok:

barit1
22nd Nov 2008, 23:08
OK, it's time for me to see you drool.

The reason I have not listed the P-51 is that almost a half-century ago I won a lottery, and the prize was a half-hour in the back of a P-51H - the ultimate production Mustang. It was several hundred pounds lighter than a P-51D, with attendant effect on TO roll and climb rate.

Although I enjoyed the aerobatics, the thing that sticks with me is the SLOW turn rate and LARGE turn radius at cruise speed. We rolled into a 60` right bank, felt 2.0 Gs centripetal force, yet the nose barely crept around the horizon. An object lesson in Newtonian physics! :)

In no particular order, SR-71, Vulcan, Spitfire, Harrier, Tomcat. Clearly none of which is ever going to happen, particularly seeing as I'm currently on a Robin HR200 :p

PBY Catalina to wander from lake to lake on a Canadian camping holiday of indefinite length.
MiG-15 for a taste of the legend.
J-35 Draken for the clean angular lines and Nordic tourism.
Tupolev 95M for the feel of the turboprops on a 20+ hour patrol flight.
Sukhoi 47 Berkut just to see what swept wings mounted back to front can do.

I still think longingly back to 1995 or so when the Finnish Air Force was selling its fleet of MiG-21s with Marconi electronics for USD 3,000 apiece.
