Hi.

Just wondering if anyone know what the best solution is when I am moving back to Europe and want to bring my Garmin 296 with the Americas.

How do I get it to show the European maps etc. ?

I think the best bet is to get a memory card, if you don't have one already, and load a European map set such as City Navigator. This will not give terrain data, but will show other topographical information. You can download the latest Jeppesen aviation database (Atlantic International for Europe) from the Garmin website at vast expense. Garmin Website (http://shop.garmin.com/aviation/databases/jeppesen.asp?PR=010%2D00356%2D00&PN=GPSMAP+296&DT=Jeppesen)

They have quietly increased the price from US$35 to US$49.95 this year!

I converted my US 496 to the European version a while ago, and tried lots of things before finding out what really works. Even Garmin's Customer Support took months to find out that you actually NEED a memory card.

What I ended up doing to get it all to work was ordering a European City Navigator DVD and the biggest Garmin Memory Card I could get. I ordered it in the USA as the price difference to Europe was HUGE. I used TigerGPS, they shipped to Europe via UPS Express (still much cheaper and faster than buying it in Europe).

I also used MyGarmin to update the other stuff for like $35 each (Terrain, Obstacle, Jeppesen if I don't remember this wrong).

Again, this was for a 496 but I think the procedure will be pretty much the same.

Thx guys..

I downloaded the stuff from Garmins website but notice that as for Norway where I will use it. The country itself is missing certain sections..

Will this be fixed with the European City Navigator DVD? Even in aviation mode?

The Norwegian coverage in City Navigator Europe is quite good. You will need to play with the "Map Information" menu on the map page to select the map you want to see.
