Cardiff Heliport

Back in the spring this article ( Buyout heralds extra services at city heliport - WalesOnline (http://www.walesonline.co.uk/business-in-wales/business-news/2008/06/04/buyout-heralds-extra-services-at-city-heliport-91466-21019070/) ) appeared in the 'Western Mail' in South Wales.

Just wondered if anyone knew if any of the developments referred to in the article (Training school for private and commercial licences, flight sim, etc) had come to fruition? If not yet any idea when? I've had a quick search on the internet for anything more recent relating to this using searches on Cardiff, Heliport, Verity and Veritair but not turned up anything.

The only evidence on the web of "new veritair" is Veritair - Professional Helicopter Services (http://www.veritair.com) which is still "under construction". The old BI site no longer refers to the Cardiff operation.

The mooted areas to be developed are rather different from those that were operated at Cardiff Heliport and need people with different skills. They would also need some capital too.

There is a contact mentioned on the website. Why not give them a call. If they are inundated with customers it may encourage them to get their skates on.

I think you'll find that Veritair Aviation Academy will be providing a whole range of courses, including PPL (H) during 2009.

Out of interest, are these going to be the 'Clipper' versions of these aircraft?

As you are no doubt aware, the heliport is surrounded on 3 sides by water. (The other side is an industrial zone which, I understand, can't be overflown.)

If the aircraft aren't floated, this means that either a) the circuit pattern is going to have to be very small (in order to remain within R22 autorotational distance of dry land); b) if anything serious goes wrong, the aircraft and occupants are going to get very wet or c) ab-initio training is going to be carried out at the other company base which, IIRC, is at Haverfordwest.

Any ideas? :confused:

Popped in yesterday afternoon as suggested and received a very friendly welcome.

Nice set up, with space and potential for lots of new developments. Not much clearer when or what they will be so will keep an eye on the press and the web-site.

Hey Bravo,

having flown into Tremorfa on several occasions, I think I can say that it's got only one-side-and-a-bit that is either mud or water.

For PPL training this issue needs to be addressed. I understand that there are various solutions, the best one (IMHO) being what Teeside have done by getting a hovercraft to be the recovery/rescue vehicle.

For other training, strangely, this isn't the case!

Doubtless there are other solutions, but the main thing is that Tremorfa is a fabulous facility for pilots in South Wales, and it's about time that pilots and their friends knew about it.

Would non-turbine pilots visit more often if there was AvGas as well as Avtur available?

And what would be a reasonable landing fee for a piston-engined helicopter?

Oh, I agree, Catherine loves Milk Tray, so make sure you land with some onboard.

Yes, this R44 tends to fly from one place to another.

Currently it is in Belgium on its annual inspection.

As a student ppl H Cardiff Heliport is top of my trip list.

Avgas or no avgas, Milk Tray will be definately be the latest revision to my floatless R22 Checklist.......

Tried e-mailing the 'training@' e-mail address a few weeks ago for a bit more detail, but no reply or response received.

Will keep an eye on the web-site as we go into the spring in the hope that we'll get a bit more detail eventually.
