American Airlines, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR), announced today that it has entered into a purchase agreement with Boeing (NYSE: BA) under which American intends to acquire an initial 42 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners scheduled for delivery beginning in 2012 and ending in 2018, with the right to purchase up to 58 additional 787s that may be scheduled for delivery beginning in 2015 and ending in 2020.
The 787 purchase agreement contains provisions that would allow American to choose not to acquire some or all of the 42 initial 787s if it has not reached a satisfactory agreement with its pilots union to operate the aircraft. American must notify Boeing of its intent to purchase a 787 at least 18 months prior to its scheduled delivery date, with the first scheduled delivery date occurring in September 2012.
This news release is interesting in that AA must have had the line positions held for a number of years for a 2012 delivery.

The news today about their safety program with their pilots going down the tube makes me wonder about the B787 subject of this thread.

It doesn't say "reach an agreement", it says "reached a satisfactory agreement".
An agreement can be deemed to be UNsatisfactory by AMR/AA management, even AFTER the agreement is reached.
Carty once said (regarding the AA pilot contract), "I've signed a contract that I can't live with". I guess he meant that the '97 pilot contract was an 'un'satisfactory agreement, huh?

They can be DC3s as far as we're concerned! (which those 30+ seaters were mainline AA aircraf... once upon a time)

Realistically, Airbus didnt have a hope of winning this order (http://www.fleetbuzzeditorial.com/2008/10/15/american787/).

AA has been using this tactic for decades to get APA to settle for an inferior contract promising more airplanes. For some reason it still seems to work.
Now, so many of the senior guys are bailing out to save their retirement funds they can use it again on the new guys. The new guys will probably bite on it too. What a shame that the airline pilot profession has lost so much ground in the last 20 years. I loved my career but feel sorry for the future of the one's still flying. It is not the same now. The company has no interest in any contract negotiations with anybody at this time. They feel they are holding the football.

Unlikely now, but perhaps when the A320/737 replacements arrive, they'll certainly have a shout. :)

Tinfoil and evo-stik is much more realistic and would give an electro-conductive surface.
sounds like the "contract" is just a bit of trumpet-blowing and we may well see them "not taking up their options" on some of the order.

The announcement has been met with a collective 'yawn' on the union's message board.
The company will at some point threaten to, or actually cancel the order. We've been through this before with the 777 orders.
