I teach Weight and Balance as part of a course. I am looking for documented Weight and Balanc e incidents so that I may illustrate the need for accurate Wt& Bal.

If anyone can help me please forward the links

Thanks in advance

Ace airlines Lockheed Constellation sat on its arse at Liverpool, and I believe that he same once happened to an RAF VC10. I am sure google will provide specific details.

This fatal accident involving a F-27 in Guernsey is a an example:

Air Accidents Investigation Branch: 2/2000 G-CHNL (http://www.aaib.dft.gov.uk/publications/formal_reports/2_2000_g_chnl.cfm)

Also, read Fate is the Hunter where Ernest K Gann describes how he nearly took out the Taj Mahal with a C-87 which had been overloaded by around 3000 lbs....

The fatal French Concorde accident involved an aircraft which might have been slightly over MTOW, but was well over RTOW. The French report doesn't make that clear though..............

Make sure your students understand the difference!!

WASALOADIE,
during the build up phase in GW1 the ' powers that be' decided to change the way cargo was manifested for the C130K from pounds to kilograms despite protests from an overworked AT system (crews and movers ) . Needless to say the inevitable happened ! It may still happen somewhere today around the world.

Would you like to expand to the lbs to kgs thing ? I was there then and IIRC the conversion happened way after GW1 - and what was the "inevitable" ? Just curious, as I teach W+B in my job and good examples are always useful

Pretty sure the VC10 on it's ass was a tech cock up with u/s fuel guages and a fin full of gas (over to Beags for the proper answer), but not a W +B incident in your context.

XR806 was damaged beyod economical repair due to the incorrect procedure being followed during defuelling.

It had been filled to maximum for fuel mapping reasons, including max fin fuel. The fin fuel gauge was U/S and indicated zero even though the fin was full.

As the aircraft was defuelled, the centre of mass moved progressively aft until the aircraft sat on its tail cone, damaging the pressure hull.

'Thrombo' tried to prevent any photos being taken, but there are several around!

c130jbloke,
I think you are confusing the conversion of the K Hercules from imperial to metric units with the earlier decision (GW1 buildup ) to require all cargo to be manifested ( by the consignor ) in kilograms. It would then need converting for weight and balance purposes for the Herc Given the intense pressure the system was under at that time this was an additional burden it did not need. The 'inevitable' happens when an item of cargo is recorded as X pounds when it is in fact X kilos. I need not labour the point !

IIRC the incident GW 1 incident was at BAH. The load was already in lbs but shown as kgs so was converted to lbs again...

e.g 10,000lbs manifested as 10,000kgs converted to lbs ...approx 22000lbs.
