View Full Version : Annual hours of sim training/checking?

JAR/EU OPS does not specifically state how many hours annual sim training and checking an airline must give their pilots. (Just requiring a PC and OPC without specifying hours).

I believe Ryanair and Easy Jet give their pilots 16 hours of sim each year. I know some airlines are down to 8 hours a year.

Could any of you tell me what BA, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France and other "large/older" airlines does?
How much of this is cheking a how much is training?

You inquire about JAA/EU...
I did such training for DEC on 747 with Air Atlanta in 2004... Bournemouth.
Initial training was to "proficiency" - did not specify minimum hours required.
We did 3 training sessions and 1 check-ride.
The F/O had never been in a 747. He failed his check.
Most airlines may have specified hours for new crewmembers on type.
Recurrent training is generally 1 training session (2 hrs), then 1 check-ride.

Thanks BelArgUsa - I am looking for the recurrent

Just to make sure I understand you correctly - you did 2+2 hours = total of 4 hours – as both PM & PF?
Was this repeated twice a year = 8 hours total annual recurrent as PM & PF?

Correct -

Session 2 hrs PF, then 2 hrs PNF for a training session.
Then check-rides PF are 2 hrs long. Might be "support" PNF for 2 hrs as well.
A captain will have training/check ride every 6 months.
A F/O once every 12 months.

Recurrent training -
I would say then, that a captain averages close to 16 hrs simulator/year. Half as PF.
A F/O would get 8 hrs simulator/year, half as PF as well.

In the UK the F.O. is checked at the same frequency as the Captain.
OPC 8 hours total over 2 days.
LPC 8 hours total over 2 days.

Flying shared between both crew members.

We do 16 hours total a year (at least, sometimes more), splittet into 8 hours LOFT and 8 hours check, loft on day 1 and check on day 2 each 6 months.

@ KLM

1 FCL, 1 OPC and 2 typerecurrents each year. Each session lasting 3.5 hrs.
FCL and OPC are checking, typerecurrents are training.

greetings, flyburg

edit: adjusted sim time from 3 to 3.5

I'd have to look at the syllabus, but I believe we do 28 hours for the initial (7 sessions at four hours each), and then 16 hours for each recurrent (four sessions of four hours). Ground school for initial is about a month, then three weeks for the sim, and recurrent is four days ground and four days sim.

All on days off, of course.
