I was on an EZ flight tonight from EGKK to LEMG. After announcing that the hour's delay wasn't their fault because the plane came in late from Gib, the pilot made the usual routeing announcement saying Jersey, Bay of Biscay, Madrid to Malaga.

In practice, we appear to have flown something like LGL, SLL, VLC, YES which is a bloody long way round. I'm curious if any professional pilot could explain why, at around midnight, someone would choose such a circuitous route. Even assuming that he was pushed east to LGL, why not request something like POI, CNA, PPN, BAN, CJN and BLN? If I get that route regularly at FL 100, it should be a no brainer at FL 340, shouldn't it?

Just curious.
Cliff.
