Hi there, just got a really simple question for those in the know...

I've just recently passed a multi engine instrument rating and would like to get it issued by the powers that be, however my multi engine class rating lapsed about 3 months ago. I've heard that to get an IR issued the class rating must be current, but i've also heard that it is not necessary for license issue...the latter makes more sense to me as surely someone who is able to pass a MEIR is proficient on type?

The only reason why it is a problem is that you cant start an MCC without the IR issued and i don't fancy wasting £400+! Cheers...

You need to redo your MEP rating. The form is only valid for 6 months.

If you fail to send it in within the timeframe it is void. The powers that be show no mercy in this regards.

I'm afraid you'll have to do at least 1 flight plus a flight test on an MEP.

Costing you around 1,000 mark.


In my case it was 2 flights then a test.
(you also have to redo the writtem MEP paper)

Ah no, i think you've misunderstood me; The MEP rating was issued last year, just expired in April thus requiring a proficiency check to "revalidate" it...i just need to know if it has to be current for me to get my IR issued by the CAA! As far as i know i shouldn't require any additional training/retake the ground exam unless its been expired for over 5 years...however i have been known to be wrong =P

You have held an MEP and now it has lapsed.

The rule would be the same. They can't issue you an MEP IR unless your MEP is current. (of course no need to do written exam, just a revalidation required)

Once you have both then you can let them lapse.

If the MEP lapses and you want an MEP IR then you must get your MEP done.
This can be done on the same flight as far as Mr. Green knows (examiner I spoke to regarding own circumstance).

Not so. There is no requirement to hold a current MEP rating to have a multi-engine IR put in your licence. Obviously, you can't use the IR on a ME aeroplane until you have a current ME type/class rating but you could use the privileges in an SEP if that rating is current.

Note: An applicant for a multi-engine IR(A) course who does NOT hold a multi-engine aeroplane class or type rating shall have completed the muli-engine training specified in JAR-FCL 1.261(b)(2) (see section F3.2) prior to commencing the flight training for the IR(A) course.


You could argue that you -hold- an MEP.
One could also argue that you don't have an MEP since *it's expired*.


Regarding the MEIR getting issued for SEP. I don't think that will happen either.

The caa will put it on you license without it being valid as you hold a type rating the fact that it has expired just means you can't use the privilege.

Above post is spot on, went to the CAA yesterday and had no problems getting the rating stamped onto my license, just can't exercise the privilege of said license until it has been revalidated, but not an issue if commencing the MCC straightaway like me. appreciate the input!

Sorry to creep the thread, but I did my PPL last July, my Night Qualification in January this year, CPL and MECR this month, and my FTO's advice that I need not apply for anything to be put on my Licence until I complete the IR at the end of this year concerns me a little.

Should I be concerned? :confused:

MH152 - my understanding is PPL is safe (I'm assumin that has been actually issued already!!), Night qualification is safe (and thankyou for calling it a "qualification" not a "rating").

CPL test pass is valid 12 months from date of test.

Multi Engine Class rating is valid 6, I say again - SIX months from date of test.

I have personal knowledge of numerous that have class rating refused after six months, I know of two that have had to resit the CPL skill test after twelve months.

Yep, the PPL was issued back in August '07 ;)
