jobs for "mid-timers"?

Reading this forum, it seems like there are two kinds of people looking for jobs; those with 200 hours looking for work, and those with 5000 JET PIC and a 747 type rating looking for work. But what about those with right around 1200~1500 hours?

In America, 1200 hours will get you a job flying PIC in a Navajo or Caravan, or some kind of similar plane. Do these kinds of jobs exist in the rest of the world? It just seems to me the only kind of flying in Africa is Beech 1900 SIC for the ultra low-timers, or heavy jet PIC (737 and up) for the high-timers.

Do they not have skydiving, aerial photography, sightseeing, or small hop passenger flying in Africa? And if so, where can you find out about these jobs?

At the moment in South Africa the situation is as follows,

With 200hrs- Flight schools are screaming for instructors

With 800-1500- Contract companies in Africa, normally on 1900's, LETS CAravans etc.

With ATP subjects and a few hundred twin turbine Hours, the airlines are hiring.

The Charter industry is there, however a number of airlines who service the smaller destinations have taken over from charter, there isnt much work for a mid time guy in that area (unless you are lucky). There are skydiving jobs available but PPL students normally become the drivers as it is a free hourbuilding pastime.

So in short- those type of jobs exist however not in vast quantities, with the recent "shortage" of pilots the airlines and contract companies have been much easier to get into, with your mid-time hours.

You're correct sky waiter, but PM me if anyone with a B737 rating needs a job.

CPL/IR, turbine/jet time & preferably some ATP subjects is the key these days.

eph6, um just to get this straight you are planning on being a career instructor?
IT can be organised, the flight schools are screaming in SA for instructors, give them a call, but be warned it is not career orientated as an FI down here. Most instructors are using it as a stepping stone so the salary etc is structured as such! There are a few schools where this approach has changed- but have a good look before making a decision.

To relocate is a big thing, consider all of your options especially with a family!

Everyone here is trying to get out of SA, sure you want to go to all the trouble to come here with your wife etc to stand a good chance of beieng robbed, sit in the dark with the power cuts etc..and on top of it do instruction..why not see company like Solenta, get on a 1900 doiing contract work somewhere in Africa or Afghanistan and go see your wife at home when U off?

Port alfred is a small serene town. Nothing like the big time jungle full of crime that Jozi and its environs are.
And 43 air school does pay pretty well. And they have a good structure. Its one place you can settle for if you are planning on making a career of instruction.
I am certain the work permit can be arranged. There are thousands of foreigners working legally in this country.
Maybe you should come test the waters before you relocate your family

According to you post 800+ hours, its easy to get job on 1900s.
Can you please tell which operators. Have 915 hrs now.
