View Full Version : Fantastic Contraption Game
Flintstone 29th Jul 2008, 19:42 I was tempted to put this in the Tech Forum as I'm sure the oily hand gang would come up with some fantastic solutions. Mind you, I've quite surprised myself by getting to level 15.
Game be here Fantastic Contraption (http://fantasticcontraption.com/)
Here's one I prepared earlier Flinty's Gadget (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=128584)
(Be patient. The fourth ball does go through eventually)
Edit: YESSSS!!! Cracked the next one as well.:E
Bern Oulli 29th Jul 2008, 21:04 Bastard! Now I'm stuck on Mission to Mars.
Flintstone 29th Jul 2008, 22:03 Fantastic Contraption: A fun online physics puzzle game (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=130803)
Have to think laterally on some of them :E
Some of them get easier once you realise that you can reposition the payload.;)
Tonkatoy 30th Jul 2008, 11:49 :( Stuck on Tube.
Just can't get a grip...
blue up 30th Jul 2008, 12:39 Mission to mars? Think "Trebuchet!" (sp?)
smo-kin-hole 30th Jul 2008, 17:00 Not only can you move the object, you can build an apparatus and drop the silly thing for some tender-loving-force. Its great fun to pull as many parts out as possible after you succeed just to simplify it. This is waaaayyyyy more fun than Suduko.........
Jimmy Macintosh 30th Jul 2008, 17:11 Same here Tonka, I get it to just about leave the starting zone then it systematically moves backwards and out the bottom
I thought I'd skip ahead, the last series of levels seem nigh on impossible.
blue up 30th Jul 2008, 18:07 2 hours straight to get through "Unpossible".
Flintstone 30th Jul 2008, 22:01 Tube is a bugger though I noticed that the right hand side has a very slight bulge at the base (f'nar). Might have another crack at it later.
blue up's right about the trebuchet ;)
Tonkatoy 30th Jul 2008, 22:52 I noticed that bulge too, got it in the end though. I have a tip, if you'd like it...
Now I'm stuck on Back and Forth. This one is going to cause me some pain, I can tell.
Jimmy Macintosh 31st Jul 2008, 03:21 Finally got through back and forth then decided to look at other peoples designs.
There is one called Catapault2, for the awash design. It is absolute genius.:D
Saying that, looking at the other designs I feel a certain level of amateurness about my befuddling.
NVpilot 31st Jul 2008, 09:24 Bastard! Now I'm stuck on Mission to Mars.
Me too but having loads of fun. Thanks Jimmy. :}
Flintstone 31st Jul 2008, 14:35 C'mon the Tonka, give us a clue. I've only The Tube, Handling and Back and Forth to do.
I've been wedging a stick across the bottom to stop my contraption falling out but have a feeling I should be working on a device of some kind.
Tonkatoy 31st Jul 2008, 14:44 I had to wedge something in the bottom to stabilise the second machine that'll do the climbing.
try something like O^O with another one underneath joined at the axles, then hang something from the middle of the ^ like one of those passive wheels to push the drive wheels onto the sides of the tube. But it falls to the bottom of the tube first, before climbing, hence the wedge...
There are a couple that are solved by more than one machine.
Still not sorted out Back and Forth.:ugh:
Pondskater 31st Jul 2008, 15:25 Thanks for pointing out the Tube bulge - I'd missed that.
Some clever sod did Mission to Mars by landing the payload on the planet in the goal:D
Jimmy Macintosh 31st Jul 2008, 16:36 Has anyone bought this yet?
If so are there any more levels?
After being inspired by some other designs, I completed all of the levels reasonably quickly. Saved one for fill-er up, called awash. I made a bulldozer. :}
dany4kin 31st Jul 2008, 17:10 Ok Big Ball anyone pleeeease!!??
Tony Hirst 31st Jul 2008, 18:14 Big Ball: Fantastic Contraption: A fun online physics puzzle game (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=160670)
Garethbmw 31st Jul 2008, 18:20 I need to stop playing now.Not a cat in hells chance i would have figured that one out.
Flintstone 31st Jul 2008, 20:02 Bums. I didn't start saving my contraptions until I had half a dozen to go and now I can't even find those few
Tonka. I was thinking along the lines of contra-rotating wheels pushing a stick upward but the bloody thing keeps falling out the bottom. Can't seem to exert enough outward pressure to get a crawler to climb. Scissors with weight pushing downward methinks.
Off to see how much it costs to buy the whole game. Highly addictive.
Desert Dingo 1st Aug 2008, 15:08 I thought I was pretty smart - constructing gadgets that managed to solve all the various problems. Then I found Fantastic Contraption • View topic - Simplest Solutions (http://fantasticcontraption.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=28)
and discovered that I was making things vastly over-complicated and there was usually a simpler and much more elegant solution.
Several of the solutions shown here use just one extra piece. There are even solutions that use no extra pieces at all!
Well worth a look, but be warned. You are going to feel totally inadequate as a design engineer.
:{
Straight Up Again 2nd Aug 2008, 12:13 I just got the tube, just back and forth left.
(my tube solution - Tube solution (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=187549))
I saw a tube solution that only used 2 pieces !
looking at some of the other solutions does make me feel a bit inadequate, but then my excuse is I'm an electronic engineer, not structural.
Some peoples designs though have so many parts you can't tell what's connected to what else.
Tony Hirst 2nd Aug 2008, 13:23 I'm up to back and forth, took one look and thought "well that's enough for today!"
I tend to create reasonably straight forward designs yet I am in awe of some of the very simple and supremely elegant designs.
I don't want to look at the Tube solution yet, haven't got to it. Here is My "Handling" idea (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=188087).
Desert Dingo 2nd Aug 2008, 13:46 This is one that deserves a prize.
Solves the tube problem with just 3 pieces.
18. Tube - Fantastic Contraption: A fun online physics puzzle game (http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=4992) - 3 Pieces
Don't look until you have found your own solution, then see what attention to detail and close tolerances can do!
Straight Up Again 3rd Aug 2008, 00:08 There's a Tube solution that uses 2 pieces - Tube 2 piece (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=183146)
I like the ones different to my ideas, why crawl up the tube when you can throw?....
Fling it (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=193142)
Throw it (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=184598)
I also like this one - Payload on a stick (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=179112)
Raredata 3rd Aug 2008, 20:08 Any hints on Big Ball??
Tony Hirst 4th Aug 2008, 00:15 Raredata, go back to Page 1 for my solution. It is all about speed and clearly the wheels don't move fast enought so some kind of multiplier is needed.
Straight Up Again 4th Aug 2008, 01:14 Pretty much what I did, took a couple of goes to get enough speed up.
However, when I looked at other peoples designs, some had managed to move the ball out of the way to go under it.
I finally managed back and forth last night, so have done all of the freely available challenges. I think I'll end up paying the $10, well worth it for the entertainment I've had so far :ok:
Tony Hirst 4th Aug 2008, 04:53 I'm on back and forth, haven't quite got it sussed, but I have a cunning plan. An order of magnitude more difficult than the previous ones so I'm not surpirsed you left it till last.
Jimmy Macintosh 4th Aug 2008, 20:10 Everytime I click on one of the links I keep getting the opening screen of the game. What do I have to do for it to display the selected contraption and level?
Straight Up Again 5th Aug 2008, 00:27 Jimmy Macintosh - you see the opening screen, click 'Play', it should then come up with a Welcome message, click 'Continue', then it should display the contraption, which you can just click 'Start' and watch it go.
ChrisBowe82 - Your link opens a solution to 4 balls for me, not Back and Forth?
Tony Hirst 5th Aug 2008, 04:09 My back and forth solution. Not an optimal one compared to some of the minimal online ones. Anyway, it works (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=230449)
Dream Land 5th Aug 2008, 04:37 Nice job!

Tony Hirst 5th Aug 2008, 13:12 Oh man, that's fantastic.
