At Man yesterday (1pm ish) Qatar flight was almost on the runway...seemed to be literally feet off of it when suddenly go around exectuted. Looked as if too fast and too far down the runway to land, but wondered if that was the case why it was executed so late ?

Any ideas folks ??

Surely wouldn't have been too fast and only decided to go around so late.

Much more likely to be the PF not feeling happy to put the aircraft down with the tarmac remaining as maybe the conditions meant it took longer than usual to get the aircraft close to the centreline and/or floating down correctly.

Carrying a bit too much speed and, as a result, chewing up runway in a prolonged float, would probably be a good candidate for binning it and going around!

Pick any one of the following:

- Aircraft in front slow to clear the runway.
- Landing clearance not received in time.
- Excessive float (for whatever reason, probably wind).
- Anything either pilot was unhappy with.

Very unlikely to have been too fast - if they were, they'd have gone around much earlier. You cannot judge an aircraft's speed from the sidelines, or even by looking out of the window - that's why we have airspeed indicators!

Probably missed the hump at the end of 23R (if indeed he was landing 23R) and had the ground drop away underneath him....:}
