View Full Version : International Flight in UK Registered Homebuilt?

Would anybody happen to know the restrictions placed on flying to Europe etc in a G-Registered homebuilt aircraft?

Also, can anyone advise on whether a single engine homebuilt of gross weight 2500lbs would be able to fly over the built up areas or would it still be restricted?

(1) Not usually a problem, but needs individual negotiated overflight permissions. PFA can usually give you all the rules and contacts.

(2) No, it's a universal condition on the permit to fly that you can't overfly congested areas - weight's irrelevant.

“but needs individual negotiated overflight permissions.”

This is not really the case. There is a standing agreement with most of Europe dating back to 1980 which removes the need for individual permission in most cases. The Professional Footballers Association will not help, but the LAA might.:ok:

“it's a universal condition on the permit to fly that you can't overfly congested areas - weight's irrelevant.”

This information is out of date. The overfilght restriction has been lifted, but there are some caveats. One is a weight restriction of 1500kg, so no in a 2500kg aircraft you would be technically braking the rule…

1. True

2. Wrong the rules have just changed, over flight is now ok if you are below 1500kg mtom.

Standing permission (via the 1980 agrement) exists for;

AUSTRIA
BULGARIA
DENMARK
FINLAND
FRANCE
GERMANY
IRELAND
LUXEMBOURG
MONACO
NETHERLANDS
SAN MARINO

Permission required, but no problem getting it;

BELGIUM

SPAIN

There are others but I go bored looking it up.

I've heard that the Spanish permission takes from a week to 2 months. Is this correct?

How wide a time window can one get for these permissions? Being limited to VFR....

Last time I asked for Spanish permission, I asked for, and received, the months of July and August.

(Yes I know, not the best time of year to go to southern Spain in a non airconditioned aeroplane!)

Except he asked about single engine homebuilt of gross weight 2500lbs

2500 lbs = 1134 kg

You are 100% correct! I am not used to aircraft weight in lbs, but I should have checked.

There are other caveats, but non that would apply to a homebuilt under the LAA system.

Last year Belgium charged Euros 80 for 12 months to overfly or land.

I faxed for permission from Spain on 07-Jul-08 and received permission on 17-Jul-08. Request was for flight end of August 08.

I have posted details (example fax and contact details) on the RV forum here: UK Vans RV Builder & Pilot Forum - Flying an RV in Europe (http://rvforum.co.uk/.//YaBB.pl?num=1176882116)

Another place worth a mention - JERSEY. You require permission and they seem to be checking. You also require separate permission for Guernsey and Alderney. Details of who and example fax etc on link above.
